Author Judy Blume\u2019s<\/a> 1970 beloved novel “Are You There God? It\u2019s Me Margaret” is heading to the big screen.<\/p>\n

The book was released more than 50 years ago, and Blume has admitted that the movie “is better than the book.”<\/p>\n

The Lionsgate film boasts a star-studded cast, as Rachel McAdams<\/a>, Kathy Bates and more are featured. Abby Ryder Fortson, who also starred as Paul Rudd’s daughter in Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” plays 11-year-old Margaret in the movie adaptation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The story follows Margaret, as she\u2019s uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey while going through the messy and tumultuous times of puberty with new friends in a new school. McAdams plays Margaret’s mother, and Bates stars as her grandmother.<\/p>\n

After declining several offers to transform the book into a film throughout the years, Blume said this opportunity felt “right.”<\/p>\n

“It was the right team,” Blume noted during an appearance on “Today.”<\/p>\n

She continued to say the pitch came to her after she told her agent to relay the message “in Hollywood land” that the book was “off the table.”<\/p>\n

Blume had a change of heart when she received a “remarkable . . . passionate and funny, intimate letter” from Kelly Fremon Craig \u2013 the writer and director of the movie.<\/p>\n

The famed author added that Craig was “very persuasive,” and Blume was a fan of her previous work. She was additionally sold on the idea when Craig mentioned that producer James L. Brooks would also be working on the movie.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Blume brought up that her book had been banned in the 1980s for covering the topic of menstruation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s like, \u2018If my kid doesn\u2019t read about it, it\u2019s never going to happen,\u2019” Blume laughed in disbelief.<\/p>\n

The author went on to say that “book banning is back in a huge . . . frightening . . . destructive way,” and noted it\u2019s become “uber-political.”<\/p>\n

Despite “Are You There God? It\u2019s Me, Margaret” being a widely popular book<\/a>, Blume admitted that she “didn\u2019t know what she was doing” when she wrote it.<\/p>\n

“It came out spontaneously,” she expressed with joy.<\/p>\n

“I never dreamed it would reach so many people or that it would mean so much.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0“Are You There God? It\u2019s Me, Margaret” will be released in theaters on April 28, 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
