The NFL world received positive news Thursday when doctors revealed safety Damar Hamlin<\/u><\/a> had made “substantial improvement” after suffering a cardiac arrest during Monday night\u2019s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Officials from the hospital provided an update<\/u><\/a> on Hamlin Thursday afternoon, saying the second-year pro has been communicating through writing because he is not yet able to speak.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr. Timothy Pritts of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said Hamlin was “beginning to awaken” Thursday morning with his neurological condition and function appearing intact.<\/p>\n

An emotional Josh Allen<\/u><\/a> spoke alongside head coach Sean McDermott Thursday afternoon following Buffalo\u2019s first practice since the terrifying events of Monday night, thanking the training staff for saving Hamlin\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I want to thank \u2014 I know coach mentioned it earlier \u2014 our training staff for going out there, not knowing what\u2019s going on but going through a checklist \u2026 saving his life,” an emotional Allen told reporters. <\/p>\n

“Being on that field, you lose sleep. You hurt for your brother. A lot of shared grief.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Hamlin’s father, Mario Hamlin, addressed the entire Bills team<\/u><\/a> on a Zoom call, telling the players Damar was “making progress.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“From a player’s view, hearing Mario talk to us, the words of encouragement he had for us,” Allen said of the call with Hamlin\u2019s father. “And I had a chance actually to talk to him Monday night, and the only thing he said was \u2018My son\u2019s gonna be all right.'”<\/p>\n

Doctors reported that Hamlin asked Thursday \u2014 in writing \u2014 about the result of Monday night’s game against the Bengals<\/a>, something Allen said Hamlin\u2019s father predicted during Wednesday\u2019s call.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“His dad said that the first thing that he\u2019s going to ask when he wakes up is \u2018Who won the game?\u2019” Allen said. “And, sure enough, that\u2019s what he did. And, as teammates, you love hearing that response. That the first thing on his mind wasn\u2019t \u2018Poor me.\u2019 It was \u2018How are my teammates doing? Did we win this game?’<\/p>\n

DAMAR HAMLIN ASKED ABOUT BILLS\u2019 GAME RESULT AFTER WAKING UP, DOCTORS SAY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

“<\/a>And that\u2019s powerful in itself, man. I don\u2019t think people really understand the bond and the relationship and the brotherhood that you have as an NFL team. Especially this one here. Guys love each other. We really do. And for Damar to go through that and to come out the other side and to be thinking about his teammates \u2026 That\u2019s Damar. That\u2019s who he is though.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Allen told reporters that while the team is not sure when they\u2019ll be able to speak to Damar, they\u2019re “chomping at the bit” to see him.<\/p>\n

“Tell him how much we love him as a team,” Allen said when asked what he\u2019ll say to Hamlin when he first is able to speak with Hamlin. “He\u2019s a kid that walks around the facility that you never see in a bad mood. He\u2019s always upbeat. He just wants to be out there and play football. We\u2019re looking forward to that.”<\/p>\n

The Bills are scheduled to play the New England Patriots<\/u><\/a> Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
