{"id":51228,"date":"2022-12-26T08:55:44","date_gmt":"2022-12-26T13:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/potatoes-arent-always-bad-for-you-its-all-in-the-preparation-new-study-indicates-51228"},"modified":"2022-12-26T08:55:44","modified_gmt":"2022-12-26T13:55:44","slug":"potatoes-arent-always-bad-for-you-its-all-in-the-preparation-new-study-indicates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/potatoes-arent-always-bad-for-you-its-all-in-the-preparation-new-study-indicates-51228","title":{"rendered":"Potatoes aren&#8217;t always bad for you \u2014 it&#8217;s all in the preparation, new study indicates"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A new study shares some sympathy for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a much-maligned vegetable<\/a>: the\u00a0potato. <\/p>\n<p>It found that the way the potato is prepared \u2014 including what people add to it \u2014 is what&#8217;s associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/diabetes\">Type 2 diabetes<\/a>, rather than the &#8220;humble&#8221; vegetable itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study was published in Diabetes Care, a peer-reviewed journal by the American Diabetes Association for health care providers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/apple-day-four-other-great-fall-food-choices-healthy-delicious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>APPLE A DAY \u2026 AND 4 OTHER GREAT FALL FOOD CHOICES THAT ARE HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Previous research had shown an association between diabetes and total potato intake.<\/p>\n<p>A team of Australian researchers, led by Dr. Nicola Bondonno from Edith Cowan University\u2019s Nutrition and Health Innovation Research Institute, explored the relationship of vegetable intake and the incidence of Type 2 diabetes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also examined the relationship of potato consumption and the incidence of Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Over 54,000 participants, ages 50-64, were recruited from the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health cohort, which examined the relationship between dietary components and\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/cancer\">incidence of cancer<\/a> and other chronic diseases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6301637927001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NUTRITION TIPS THAT MAKE GREAT SENSE AND ARE DELICIOUS, TOO<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The participants filled out a 192-item &#8220;food frequency questionnaire&#8221; at the start of the study.<\/p>\n<p>Those who took part noted how often they ate a particular food for the past 12 months, said co-author Pratik Pokharel, a PhD candidate who worked on the analysis for the paper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The intake of foods and nutrients were then estimated using standard recipes and the software FoodCalc,&#8221; Pokharel told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that those with the highest total vegetable intake had a 21% lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes \u2014 compared to the group with the lowest intake of vegetables, after adjusting for lifestyle and demographic confounding variables.<\/p>\n<p>They also found that participants with the highest potato consumption had a 9% higher risk of Type 2 diabetes, compared to the group who ate the lowest daily amount.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we separated boiled potatoes from mashed potatoes, fries or crisps, boiled potatoes were no longer associated with a higher risk of diabetes. They had a null effect,&#8221; Pokharel said in a press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6317764809112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>EASY CHRISTMAS RECIPES FROM STEVE DOOCY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The study found that those who ate the most potatoes also consumed more butter, red meat and soft drinks, which are known to increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you account for that, boiled potatoes are no longer associated with diabetes,&#8221; added Pokharel in the press release.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s only fries and mashed potatoes, the latter likely because [they&#8217;re] usually made with butter, cream and the like.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 90% adults don\u2019t meet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/nutrition\">fruit and vegetable recommendations<\/a>, according to the United States Department of Agriculture\u2019s latest dietary guidelines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/best-foods-heart-health-experts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>THESE ARE THE BEST FOODS FOR YOUR HEART, EXPERTS SAY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The guidelines recommend that most adults consume two &#8220;cup equivalents&#8221; of fruits and two-and-a-half &#8220;cup-equivalents&#8221; of vegetables daily.<\/p>\n<p>Experts suggest aiming for four half-cup servings of fruit and five half-cup servings of vegetables every day to put these recommendations into practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The American Heart Association suggests fruits and vegetables should fill half the plate for each meal to meet these goals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/best-vegetables-for-health-nutritionists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>THE BEST FRUITS AND VEGETABLES FOR YOUR HEALTH, ACCORDING TO NUTRITIONISTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One cup of raw leafy vegetables or a baked potato should be about the size of a baseball or average-sized fist,&#8221; the association added on its website.<\/p>\n<p>Pokharel recommends eating a variety of foods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is good to replace white rice and pasta with boiled potatoes, as potatoes have fiber, vitamin C and other nutrients \u2014 and potato is still a vegetable,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We get other nutrients from potatoes that we do not find in white rice or pasta,&#8221; he also said.<\/p>\n<p>Refined grains are low in certain nutrients, such as fiber, so they can lead to nutritional deficiencies, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study had certain limitations, including that the participants&#8217; diets were self-reported and that the researchers only measured their diets at one point in time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pokharel said repeated measurements of dietary intake would give a more accurate estimate of a complete diet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He also said the study is only a prospective study \u2014 so it cannot establish a causal link between vegetable intake and diabetes, such as noting that eating less vegetables actually causes diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People eat food rarely in isolation,&#8221; Pokharel said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We should look at the bigger picture while assessing the relationship between dietary intake and\u00a0disease incidence,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is crucial to look at the underlying dietary pattern and food processing method to see what other culprits are rather than blaming on one food,&#8221; he also said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/potatoes-arent-always-bad-you-preparation-study-indicates\">Source &#8211; https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/potatoes-arent-always-bad-you-preparation-study-indicates <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study shares some sympathy for a much-maligned vegetable: the\u00a0potato.
