A Connecticut community rallied together in a touching display of generosity after a Grinch stole a resident’s Christmas food donation<\/a> bin from his holiday lawn display.<\/p>\n

East Hartford resident Rick Bollash is known locally for his elaborate Santa’s Village display, which he has set up on his front lawn for the past three years. Among the life-size inflatables and a mailbox for children to send letters to Santa, Bollash displays a designated donation bin to\u00a0encourage visitors to contribute items to the local food bank.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last week, Bollash was leaving his house when he noticed that the bin had been taken, he told Fox News. After he and Mayor Mike Walsh posted about the theft on Facebook, the East\u00a0Hartford community came together to stop the Grinch from ruining Christmas in a scene reminiscent of the holiday classic “It\u2019s a\u00a0Wonderful Life.”<\/a><\/p>\n

“After\u00a0what happened.\u00a0It\u2019s like a whole Hallmark\u00a0movie, everybody came together\u00a0and it went from the Grinch\u00a0stealing it to the Whos in\u00a0Whoville saving Christmas again,” Bollash told Fox News host John Roberts on “America Reports” Thursday.<\/p>\n

Within just a few days, residents dropped off over 60 bags of groceries and two $500 checks for the St. Mary\u2019s Food Bank, the Journal Inquirer reported.<\/p>\n

\u00a0“I came home one morning\u00a0and the whole front step was\u00a0blocked with bags of food and\u00a0everything, which is a good\u00a0thing.\u00a0I had to go around the back door\u00a0to get in,” Bollash recalled.<\/p>\n

The theft was devastating to Bollash, who at the time considered ending the holiday lawn display, he said. However, the community’s outpouring of support restored his enthusiasm for the tradition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s been unbelievable, and\u00a0actually Santa Claus and Mrs.\u00a0Claus came by Tuesday night,\u00a0came on a fire truck and a\u00a0police escort, and we did a fill\u00a0the cruiser food drive,” he told Fox News.<\/p>\n

Bollash said he hopes the person who stole the donation bin will benefit from it, acknowledging that the holidays are a particularly difficult time for the needy.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m hoping it might\u00a0have been somebody in need,”\u00a0he said. “Because I\u2019ve had it for years, I\u2019ve\u00a0never had vandals before.\u00a0That\u2019s a lot of stuff that they\u00a0could destroy out there.”<\/p>\n

Bollash said he received far more donations this year than he ever has in the past because of his community’s outpouring of generosity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
