Ian Smith,<\/a> the former gym owner who was arrested for defying lockdown orders during the pandemic responded to a Washington Post column citing the benefits of exercise to avoid fatal COVID-19 on Thursday, calling the publication’s delayed admission “infuriating.”<\/p>\n

The Washington Post report revealing that exercise reduces the risk of contracting a fatal case of COVID-19<\/u><\/a> was widely mocked online for “confirming the obvious” after health columnist Gretchen Reynolds cited what she called an “eye-opening study” that found that exercise, even in the smallest amount, greatly reduced the risk of contracting a severe coronavirus infection.<\/p>\n

Critics blasted the outlet for taking years to confirm what most of the public had known since the pandemic’s onset, while citing the column as vindication for Smith and others who were outspoken about keeping gyms open at the height of the outbreak.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON POST REPORT BLASTED FOR \u2018STATING THE OBVIOUS\u2019 ABOUT BENEFITS OF EXERCISE ON COVID 2 YEARS LATER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

“It’s infuriating,” Smith said of the column on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” “It was something we knew all\u00a0along\u2026.they call it an \u2018eye-opening\u00a0study.\u2019\u00a0Nothing about this study is\u00a0groundbreaking in any sense. In fact, it\u2019s elementary school-level knowledge.\u00a0When I was In third grade, I was taught\u00a0that exercising and eating right\u00a0meant I\u2019d be healthy and not get\u00a0sick.\u00a0We all knew that going into 2020.”<\/p>\n

“For some reason, the established\u00a0science was wiped clean and\u00a0replaced by the\u00a0experts of COVID, who did pretty\u00a0much everything the opposite,” he added. “You know, you said casinos and\u00a0bars were open, gyms and\u00a0churches were closed.\u00a0They even closed parks and\u00a0oceans.\u00a0All of these things we know have\u00a0a great benefit on your health,\u00a0not just in respect to COVID,\u00a0but health overall.”<\/p>\n

The study cited in the Washington Post column was published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine and examined the impact of physical inactivity on COVID-19 outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The findings, Reynolds wrote, “add to mounting evidence that any amount of exercise helps lower the ferocity of coronavirus infections.”<\/p>\n

Smith emphasized in multiple Fox News appearances that Americans aren\u2019t any healthier because of public health guidance and has previously blamed misguided public health policies for contributing to the obesity crisis in the U.S.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n

The Washington Post column is further fuel for critics like him who challenged public health policy to keep people exercising during the COVID-19 crisis, he said.<\/p>\n

“We watched Americans\u2019 health\u00a0decline over the last two years,\u00a0while the government would not\u00a0step back on these restrictions\u00a0and held on to them in places\u00a0like New Jersey and California,\u00a0and other blue states, for as\u00a0long as they possibly could,\u00a0even when all the science had\u00a0been concluded,” Smith told Carlson.<\/p>\n

Twitter users responding to the Washington Post column urged Smith to take legal action against New Jersey after his arrest for defying Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy’s stay-at-home order in 2020.<\/p>\n

While he didn’t confirm whether he will consider a lawsuit, Smith did say he believes criminal activity was at play.<\/p>\n

“The American people need to start\u00a0looking at COVID protocol and the\u00a0reaction to COVID as a crime\u00a0scene, not a series of mistakes\u00a0by the government,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
