Iran on Wednesday was ousted<\/a> from the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women over its oppressive policies for women and its brutal crackdown on protesters.<\/p>\n

Twenty-nine members of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)\u00a0voted to oust Tehran after the U.S. called on the\u00a054-member body to immediately remove the\u00a0Islamic Republic of Iran from the commission “for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term.”<\/p>\n

In a statement ahead of the vote Wednesday, U.S.\u00a0Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield argued that the commission could not “do its\u00a0important work if it is being undermined from within.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

AT LEAST 24 IN IRAN FACE EXECUTION FOR INVOLVEMENT IN PROTESTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

“The Commission is the premier UN body for promoting gender equality and empowering women,” she said ahead of the vote.\u00a0“Iran\u2019s membership at this moment is an ugly stain on the Commission\u2019s credibility.”<\/p>\n

Some 16 nations abstained from the vote while 8 countries, including China opposed Iran\u2019s removal from the commission.<\/p>\n

Thomas-Greenfield championed the work of women\u2019s rights activists in Iran who have protested the\u00a0Khamenei regime and called on the UN to take action.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tehran has come under international ire following\u00a0the death of\u00a022-year-old\u00a0Mahsa Amini who was killed while in police custody in September, and whose death prompted thousands to protest nationwide. <\/p>\n

Amini was arrested and beaten by Iran\u2019s morality police for wearing her hijab incorrectly before she succumbed to her injuries.<\/p>\n

Women have since abandoned their hijabs, cut their hair and hit the streets\u00a0alongside male supporters in protest, calling on the regime to remove its oppressive policies and address human rights abuses.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The Iranian government probably thought Mahsa\u2019s death would just be another statistic. A little addition to its long record of state-sponsored violence against women,” Thomas-Greenfield said Wednesday. “But this time \u2013 this time \u2013 was different.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
