Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday once again drew international attention when he warned that if even one missile enters Russian territory, “hundreds” of warheads will respond.<\/p>\n

“I assure you, after the early warning system receives a signal of a missile attack, hundreds of our missiles are in the air,” he said from a summit in\u00a0Kyrgyzstan, reported Russian news outlet RIA. “It is impossible to stop them.”<\/p>\n

“There will be nothing left of the enemy, because it is impossible to intercept a hundred missiles. This, of course, is a deterrent \u2013 a serious deterrent,” he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

UKRAINE CALLS ON US TO BACK TRIBUNAL TO TRY KREMLIN FOR WAR CRIMES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Putin made headlines after he appeared to suggest that he may make changes to Russia\u2019s nuclear deterrence doctrine by employing a first-strike policy, which he referred to as a “disarming strike” \u2013 a strategy he said is motivated by the current U.S. deterrence policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Russia already has this strategy embedded in its nuclear doctrine.<\/p>\n

Washington does have a policy that allows it to use a nuclear weapon, not only in retaliation to a nuclear attack but also in response to non-nuclear threats \u2013 and so does Moscow, explained Russia expert and\u00a0former DIA intelligence officer for Russian Doctrine & Strategy, Rebekah Koffler.<\/p>\n

“What this was, from the intelligence standpoint, is \u2018strategic messaging\u2019,”\u00a0she said, adding that Putin\u2019s comments signaled that “Russia may use nuclear weapons in Ukraine if the US\/NATO continue to provide weapons to Ukraine \u2013 especially those that Ukraine can use to strike deep into Russia proper.”<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s comments come just days after three separate drone strikes<\/a> hit bases hundreds of miles within Russia\u2019s borders \u2013 an attack that Moscow blamed squarely on Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Based on the existing Russian doctrine, Russia can respond with nuclear strikes, because Engels airbase is the home to nuclear-capable bombers, that are considered strategic assets, worthy of defending with nukes,” Koffler explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kyiv has not accepted responsibility for the strikes, but the attacks outside of Ukraine\u2019s borders, where a brutal war has raged<\/a> for more than nine months, put top defense officials on the alert this week.<\/p>\n

“It is a terrible war in Ukraine. It is also a war that can become a full-fledged war that spreads into a major war between NATO and Russia,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview Friday.<\/p>\n

“There is no doubt that a full-fledged war is a possibility,” he added, noting that NATO was doing everything possible to prevent this.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Friday accused Putin of engaging in “deeply irresponsible nuclear saber-rattling” and said\u00a0that the U.S. “stands ready to negotiate new arms control agreements with partners operating in good faith.”<\/p>\n

Koffler warned that the rhetoric alone from the top nuclear powers could escalate the war in Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s no question that Russia and the U.S. are climbing an escalatory ladder in Ukraine, which may end up in Putin\u2019s use of nuclear weapons,” she told Fox News Digital. “Neither side wants to end up in a direct conflict, but they are climbing this ladder unintentionally due to the misunderstanding of each other\u2019s posture.”<\/p>\n

“Both sides are betting that the other one will blink first,” she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
