Tehran, Iran carried out on Thursday what appeared to be the first execution of an Iranian man<\/a> arrested after protesting against the regime in support of women\u2019s rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mohsen Shekari, 23, was hanged Thursday morning after being found guilty by a Revolutionary Court of “enmity against God.”<\/p>\n

An Iranian news outlet known as Mizan, which is tied to Tehran\u2019s judiciary system, said the 23-year-old was accused of wielding a machete, injuring a police officer and blocking street access in Tehran on Sept. 25 with the “intention of\u00a0killing and creating terror and depriving people of freedom and security.”<\/p>\n

Fellow activists claimed he was convicted following a “show trial” that lacked any due process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shekari reportedly claimed a friend encouraged him to attend the protest and to target a police officer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thousands have hit the streets<\/a> across Iran in recent months to protest the oppressive Khamenei\u00a0regime and have demanded rights for women after 22-year-old\u00a0Mahsa Amini was killed while in police custody in September.<\/p>\n

Amini was fatally beaten by Iran\u2019s morality police and arrested for not wearing her hijab properly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Women have since begun abandoning their hijabs and cutting their hair in the anti-government protests.<\/p>\n

Tehran has aggressively cracked down on the demonstrators, and over 18,000 people have been arrested for protesting according to some reports.<\/a><\/p>\n

FUTURE OF IRANIAN MORALITY POLICE UNCLEAR AFTER OFFICIAL’S REMARK<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The Iran Journal reported this week that some women have been threatened with sexual violence after being arrested and interrogated by Iranian security forces.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Others have gone missing or have turned up dead following their arrests.<\/p>\n

It is unclear how many of the demonstrators have been sentenced after protesting for government reform, though according to the\u00a0non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights at least 20 have been sentenced to death as of last month, reported Reuters.<\/p>\n

As of Thursday, 475 protesters have been killed according to the activist HRANA news agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iran has long been criticized for its use of hangings against criminal and political dissidents alike.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Western officials have condemned Tehran\u2019s brutal crack down<\/a> and State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters Tuesday that “the world is watching.”<\/p>\n

“These sentences, we know, are meant to intimidate people, to suppress dissent,” he added. “They simply underscore Iran\u2019s leadership fears of its own people and the fact that Iran\u2019s government fears the truth.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
