Gun enthusiasts in Oregon are scrambling to stock up on firearms before a new permit-to-purchase law<\/a> goes into effect, drastically tightening gun regulations in the state.<\/p>\n

Karl Durkheimer, the owner of Oregon’s Northwest Armory gun store just south of Portland, told Fox News that gun sales<\/a> have hit a 30-year-high in recent weeks as Oregon residents await a judge’s ruling on whether the start of the strict permit-to-purchase law will be postponed amid Thursday’s deadline.<\/p>\n

“Two things are happening.\u00a0There\u2019s fear they won\u2019t be able to\u00a0get a gun, but there’s the actual\u00a0logistics that they won\u2019t be\u00a0able to do the background check,” Durkheimer said on “America Reports” Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘BLATANTLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL’: STRICT GUN CONTROL LAW FACES NEW NRA-BACKED LEGAL CHALLENGE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The new law, which will require Oregonians to receive a permit in order to purchase firearms, bans the manufacture, purchase or sale of ammunition magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.<\/p>\n

Supporters of the measure say it will curb violent crimes in the state, as well as accidental deaths and suicides. However, critics say the law will limit state residents from exercising their Second Amendment rights<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sharing a photo of a jam-packed parking lot outside his shop, Durkheimer said Oregonians fear that if they don’t apply for a permit immediately, they may not\u00a0get one in the near future.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s going to take a year before\u00a0an Oregonian has a permit,” Durkehimer said. “If the effective date of the\u00a0permit happens in the next 30\u00a0days \u2013 let\u2019s say, that\u2019s what some of\u00a0the judges have been talking\u00a0about \u2013 effectively an Oregonian\u00a0will not be able to buy a\u00a0firearm anywhere in the United States.\u00a0And that\u2019s a violation\u00a0of the Second Amendment. The Oregonians will lose their\u00a0constitutional rights.”<\/p>\n

Oregon\u2019s Measure 114 narrowly passed at the ballot box last month, when 50.7% of Oregonians threw their support behind the gun restrictions. Durkheimer blamed residents of Multnomah County and politicians in Salem for propelling the measure to the finish line.<\/p>\n

OREGON GUN LAW BATTERED WITH SETBACKS, OUTCRY FROM COPS BEFORE EVEN TAKING EFFECT: \u2018GRAVE PROBLEMS\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

“Oregonian’s rights are being trampled right now, by the Multnomah County voters, the\u00a0politicians in Salem, and I\u2019ve\u00a0lived most of my life in\u00a0Multnomah County. There is some\u00a0disconnect.\u00a0I don\u2019t see the connection\u00a0between lawful gun ownership and\u00a0violent crime and mental health\u00a0crises,”\u00a0he said. “The city of Portland has a\u00a0violent crime problem.\u00a0The state of Oregon does not.”<\/p>\n

The Oregon Department of Justice requested to delay the measure<\/a> after law enforcement officials came out in full-force that they lack the infrastructure, funds and personnel to create the permit-to-purchase program. A federal judge is expected to make a decision on postponing the measure’s start date later this week.<\/p>\n

“Oregon is a point of contact for\u00a0the FBI so the Oregon state\u00a0police do the background checks.\u00a0It\u2019s an instant check.\u00a0Normally, 90% of the people\u00a0get approved in minutes,\u00a0seconds,” Durkheimer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With the police department already spread thin, Durkheimer said there are approximately 36,000 people that\u00a0have delayed background checks\u00a0“because the state just doesn\u2019t\u00a0have the resources to do their\u00a0job properly like they have been\u00a0doing for 23 years.”<\/p>\n

Anyone whose background check has not cleared by Dec. 8 or the postponed deadline will have to wait to obtain a permit to purchase, according to OSP.<\/p>\n
