The owners of a rental home in the Hamptons and the rental website Homeaway.com misrepresented a rental as safe, a federal lawsuit brought this week by the family of two women killed<\/a> in a fire last summer claims.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit claims the Sag Harbor, New York,<\/a> home had “worthless carcasses of non-functioning alarms”\u00a0despite an email from HomeAway, saying it had working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and a fire extinguisher, the New York Post reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jillian Wiener, 21, and sister Lindsay Wiener, 19,\u00a0died when a fire broke out in the home at 3 a.m. on Aug. 3.<\/p>\n

“Rather than fond memories of a week\u2019s vacation<\/a> on Long Island\u2019s east end, the Wiener family is left with a nightmare from which they cannot wake,” the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n

The family had used the house\u2019s outdoor kitchen, which had never been inspected, according to the lawsuit. The smoke and carbon monoxide detectors also weren\u2019t functioning, court documents reportedly said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sisters were vacationing at the home with their parents and brother who made it out of the house alive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still underway but\u00a0Southampton\u2019s public safety and emergency management administrator said in late August that it likely started in the outdoor kitchen, according to the East Hampton Star. The homeowners are facing dozens of code violations in the town of Southampton.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The $1.8 million house had been rented by the Wiener family for the week for $8,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This is as reckless a situation as you can find,” the family\u2019s attorney, Andres Alonso, said, the Post reported.<\/a> “This didn\u2019t need to happen and it happened because everyone decided they were going to take shortcuts.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
