Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA)<\/strong> sowed confusion when it unveiled the RTX 30 laptop graphics<\/a>. They didn\u2019t have labels distinguishing efficient (Max-Q) from the Full-performance GPUs thus making it possible for gaming laptops with lower spec but full-power chip to outperform power-constrained top-end components.<\/p>\n

Nvidia wants transparency with the latest chips<\/strong><\/p>\n

The company is now rectifying the chaos by requiring companies that sell gaming laptops with the new RTX 30-series graphics chips to be transparent regarding the power people expect. Nvidia now requires the companies to disclose specific clock speed stats and total graphics power on their sites, which will tell buyers everything they should know regarding the graphics potential of the laptop. Interestingly, the companies will not have to mention whether the chips are Max-Q variants since the “Max-Q” are not part of the GPU name.<\/p>\n

Instead, Max-Q is currently used in communicating that a laptop with an RTX 30-series graphics chip comes with efficient features such as Advanced Optimus, Dynamic Boost 2, and Whisper Mode 2. In the past, the Max-Q branding simplified<\/a> the process of determining the general performance of a laptop without knowing the specific clock speeds. The company said that buyers should get a sense of which laptops are powerful in performance.<\/p>\n

Sellers should not hide clock speeds and power consumption <\/strong><\/p>\n

The move by the company is important since it will require sellers not to hide this important marketing information. This will help buyers make informed purchases without relying on reviews and early adopters for specs. Sharing of the specs makes it easier for consumers to understand how in some cases the RTC 3070 in MSI’s GP66 Leopard can sometimes outperform the RTX 30380 in the MSI GS66 Stealth. Now that the Max-Q brand doesn’t show the power capabilities of graphic chips, sellers need to be transparent with clock speed and power consumption.<\/p>\n

Nvidia spokesperson said that they require OEMs to update product pages to the Max-Q tech features for all GeForce laptops including power and clock speeds which communicate the system\u2019s GPU performance.
