(NASDAQ:AMZN) <\/strong>has increased the hourly pay for its employees temporarily. The hourly pay increase is applicable for workers at whole food grocery centers, delivery centers, and warehouses in the US through April 2020. Each employee in this category earns a minimum hourly pay of $15. Amazon will pay a similar increase to the workers in Europe and the UK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An unprecedented demand for household items<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dave Clark, Senior Vice President (Worldwide Operations) of Amazon, said the demand for labor at this juncture is very high because of the huge order rush from people. Amazon is receiving an unprecedented demand for household items because of the outbreak of coronavirus. He said providing priority items at the doorstep mainly for the elderly and people with health issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amazon to recruit 100,000 workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To meet the growing demand for several household items and others, Amazon plans to recruit 100,000 workers. The company will hire workers (warehouse workers and delivery drivers) for part-time and full-time positions. Clarke encouraged people who lost their jobs in sectors that include travel, restaurant, and hospitality can apply for these new positions. They can stay with Amazon until things become normal, and their employees take them back.<\/p>\n<p>It has informed the customers that there could be delays for more than two days. Several household items, including cleaning supplies, are out of stock. The online retailer is working hard to meet the growing demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tweaks time-off policy for hourly workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amazon allowed its hourly workers last week to take unlimited no pay leave during March 2020. However, the company would pay for up to two weeks for the hourly workers if they suffer from coronavirus or quarantined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suspends shipment of non-essential items<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many people are shopping online from their homes because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon has suspended the shipment of non-essential items to the warehouses. According to a communiqu\u00e9 to the sellers, the e-commerce giant has put on hold items other than household staples and medical supplies until April 5, 2020.
