(NASDAQ:AMAT)<\/strong> and counterpart giant semiconductor manufacturer, Tokyo Electron have canceled their plans for a consolidation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The companies called off the merger following antitrust objections from the United States. They announced on Monday that the $10 billion merger has been put off. The proposed merger faced a lot of opposition from the United States Justice Department contrary to expectations that the opposition would come from South Korean and Chinese watchdogs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Companies in the line of manufacturing semiconductor equipment are experiencing dwindling number of a drop in the number of clients. Operating such heavy manufacturing has become an expensive affair. Very few well-established companies remaining in the market have enough financial returns to handle the high-cost demands. Some experts believe that the justice department was more focused on the impact of future technologies rather than the current ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The merger would have reduced competition between the two companies. Now they have to go back and review their competitive strategies. One of the financial analysts called Mehdi Hosseini said that the market should expect aggressive competition between the two. It is a bit ironic considering the two firms have been making preparations to work as a single unit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The merger between the two companies would have been the biggest merger in Japan in recent years. Had the merger gone through, the combined expected sales would have amounted to about $15 billion. The estimate is based on the revenue figures for 2014. Tokyo Electron and Applied Materials are quite competitive. They were ranked the top two in their respective industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applied Materials CEO, Gary Dickerson said that the merger was to offer an avenue for the company to exercise efficiently their strategies. He also said that the merger could not have eliminated the existing competition in the industry despite the belief by the justice department.
