However, both of the oil giants have managed to post earnings higher than the fall predicted by the analysts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Total and BP have offset the sharp drop in crude oil prices with enhanced refining margins. The companies have generated more valuable products like chemicals and petrol through processing crude from downstream operations to reap more profits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bigger energy groups have leveraged refineries to hedge against the sharply falling prices of Brent Crude oil. However, the small players, who lack this capability, have been badly affected by the recent oil plunge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne, Total has been able to bank on cost cutting measures and its ability to profit from an integrated business model.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BP has reported its profit at $2.6 billion, a drop of 20% for the same period previous year, after making adjustments for inventory changes and onetime costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The exploration and production unit of the BP has reported profit of $600 million following the impact of the drop in oil prices. The unit has reported profit of $4.4 billion for the same period the previous year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the downstream operations of the BP have reversed the trend with $2.2 billion when compared to $1 billion previous year. The company has greatly benefitted from refining, trading, and marketing operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to an analyst, at Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale Irene Himona, the downstream operations have helped the BP to reduce the drop in profits to less than 50% on an annual drop in oil prices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The U.S. Business arm of the BP has reported a loss of $550 million for the upstream operations in 1Q2015 following the cancelation fee payment to offshore drilling rigs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The company\u2019s profits from its stake in Roseneft, a Russian state-owned firm, declined to $183 million in 1Q2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Total has reported $2.6 billion (down 22%) net income in 1Q2015.
