Government investigators are looking closely at the moves made by William Walters and Phil Mickelson. While Walters is associated with the gambling industry, Mickelson is a household name in the world of Golf.<\/p>\n
The trading by the above two individuals on CLX\u2019s shares coincides with\u00a0 a takeover bid for the company. This was initiated by Carl C Icahn, who is known across the globe for his investments. Investigators are examining the possibility of Walters being tipped off by Carl. In turn, Mickelson was believed to be provided the information by William.<\/p>\n
Ichan has denied passing along information. He stated that his record had been spotless for the past five decades. He\u00a0 also stated that while he knew William Walters, he has neither met\u00a0\u00a0 nor spoken\u00a0 to Phil Mickelson.<\/p>\n
Details which led to the investigation<\/b><\/p>\n
The The Clorox Co (NYSE:CLX) takeover bid began in the first half of 2011. Ichan disclosed that he had been purchasing shares of the company through different firms owned by him. This disclosure led to a 6% rise in the prices of CLX\u2019s shares. He then issued a letter offering $76.50 per stock of the company. He noted that firms belonging to him were the biggest investors in the company.<\/p>\n
This again witnessed a jump in the value of each\u00a0 share.<\/p>\n
However, before the bid could be placed, there was a lot of unusual activity noticed in the way the CLX\u2019s shares were traded.\u00a0 However, the company did not accept Ichan\u2019s offer, and he withdrew the bid in September of the same year.<\/p>\n
The investigation began at Finra. This is the group that looks at fraudulent activity with shares being traded on Wall Street. The group found transactions linked to both Walters and Mickelson at the same time of the bid. Considering the failed bid, investigators are looking at the possibility of information being passed on both these individuals from Icahn Enterprises.
