(NYSE:MDT)<\/b> and <b>Edwards Lifesciences Corp (NYSE:EW)<\/b>. Medtronic agreed to pay around $1 billion to its rival for settling this litigation. This also allowed Medtronic to keep the CoreValve artificial heart valve in the United States market. The announcement for the settlement of the litigation was made on May 20, 2014. According to the announcement, the long litigation over the technology for implantation of replacement valves, which prevents the patients from an open-heart surgery between these two arch-rivals ended. CoreValve replaces the aortic heart valves in a diseased person, who is too frail for an open-heart surgery. An open-heart surgery requires the separation of the chest bone in the patient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Medtronic to pay for settlement<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Edwards was the first to market with the Sapien technology in the year 2011, in the U.S. while the Medtronic group got its United State regulatory approval for CoreValve in the month of January this year. Medtronic announced that Edwards would receive a one-time payment of $750 million, in addition to royalties through April 2022, depending upon the sales of CoreValve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Chief Executive of Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT), Omar Ishrak said that this was an important breakthrough for the people suffering from this disease. The company is totally focussed to roll this out as quickly as it is possible. The result of this settlement was seen on the shares also. The stocks of Edwards fell 1.8% as the investors braced for any further market share shifts in Medtronic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the announcement of the settlement of this litigation, Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT) also posted the earnings and financial report for the fourth quarter.
