In Norway, that is the case. It seems that while oil and gas companies help power projects around the world, they are not themselves seeing light at the end of the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Initially, the companies hoped against hope that the coalition government in Norway would introduce measures that are favorable for their businesses, but such hopes seem to be fading fast away in view of the latest sentiments by the country&#8217;s Petroleum and Energy Minister Tord Lein.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Performance impacted by costs<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The latest quarterly reporting has brought to the fore the many challenges facing oil and gas companies operating in Europe. Though profit improvements were registered by various operators, it was clear that costs hampered profits and the challenge might weigh heavily for the rest of the year if immediate action is not taken.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Europe, and Norway in particular, Royal Dutch Shell Plc (ADR) (NYSE:RDS.B) and its peers such as <b>Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM)<\/b>, <b>Statoil ASA (ADR) (NYSE:STO)<\/b> and <b>ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP)<\/b> have either cancelled or withheld several drilling projects that were planned in 1Q or 2014. AS such, through a lobby group known as Norwegian Oil and Gas Association, the company claims that drilling projects with the value of 80 billion kroner are in jeopardy due to the unfavorable business environment in Norway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shell, for instance, last month shelved its gas compression projected that had been proposed for Ormen Lange.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Government changes tone<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sentiments that the government might not present the promised package of measures to address the economic hardships facing oil companies, especially the offshore projects, seem to be the like the last straw that might break the back of Royal Dutch Shell Plc (ADR) (NYSE:RDS.B) and its peers as they had hoped for the measures to come soon.
