This is a multi billion dollar question plaguing tech companies like Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL). With an estimated shipment of 1 billion smartphones in 2013, one in every seven human being is now said to posses a smartphone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The World Is Getting Smaller:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The oft repeated phrase \u201cThe world is getting smaller\u201d holds very true. But the applications or apps in short are not. They are becoming more power hungry and consume more energy. Smartphone batteries need to be charged very often. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) is still going ahead and developing wearable technology. Google Glass is already being tested by actual users and iWatch is fast assuming a definite shape. These devices will have a very tiny space for batteries but will require loads of energy to run the apps. On one hand, the devices are getting smaller but the energy requirements are increasing by leaps and bounds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The Charging Issue:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is the solution? Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) is already working on this issues and holds a number of exotic patents. Some of the technologies being looked at are kinetic energy derived from motion (very similar to that used in quartz watches) as well as using small solar panels for charging. These technologies are also being looked at by the competitors. The problem with them is that the current technology may not provide the required energy. But the real winner appears to be wireless inductive charging. Apple has several patents in this field also.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The Game Changer:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Will this technological step become a game changer? It does appear so, by all appearances. If Apple Inc (NASDAQAAPL) is able to develop a patent and commercialize it fast enough then the rest of the competitors will be left far behind. And, if it can ensure that only its devices can get charged; Apple will be at the winning post. The feature can ensure Apple\u2019s dominance in the field and its products will be preferred over the others. It could also lead the company to dominance in the smartphone business; the crown is with Samsung Electronics right now.
