With 100 days until the midterms<\/a>, one thing has become surprisingly clear.<\/p>\n

Democrats<\/a> know exactly what election they want to run.<\/p>\n

Republicans<\/a> still don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

100 DAY SPRINT TO THE MIDTERMS KICKS OFF AS REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS CLASH FOR CONTROL ACROSS THE COUNTRY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not talking about policy. Republicans have plenty of issues that resonate with voters.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m talking about something much simpler.<\/p>\n

The story.<\/p>\n

After three decades studying how people make decisions, I\u2019ve learned that people don\u2019t vote issue by issue. They don\u2019t carry around a mental spreadsheet comparing tax policy, border security, energy production and education reform.<\/p>\n

They simplify.<\/p>\n

They look for one idea that helps them make sense of everything else.<\/p>\n

THE AMERICAN DREAM NOW COMES WITH A ZIP CODE: HERE’S WHERE STARTER HOMES ARE STILL WITHIN REACH<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Democrats have done.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve taken a complicated election and reduced it to one word:<\/p>\n

Affordability.<\/p>\n

Whether or not you agree with their solutions isn\u2019t the point. From a communications perspective, they\u2019ve done something incredibly powerful: they\u2019ve given voters a lens.<\/p>\n

Every new headline about rising costs reinforces the same story.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what great messaging<\/a> does. It doesn\u2019t just communicate. It organizes.<\/p>\n

Republicans, meanwhile, have no shortage of winning issues.<\/p>\n

Immigration.<\/p>\n

Those are all important conversations. Many poll extremely well.<\/p>\n

But they\u2019re still individual conversations.<\/p>\n

Collectively, they don\u2019t tell one story.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the difference between having a message and having a menu.<\/p>\n

One gives people clarity.<\/p>\n

The other gives them choices.<\/p>\n

As someone who studies persuasion, I can tell you that clarity almost always wins.<\/p>\n

Republicans\u2019 closest thing to a national message is that Democrats have become too extreme. That they\u2019re too far left, too ideological, too willing to let government expand into every part of American life.<\/p>\n

That message energizes Republicans. It persuades some independents, too.<\/p>\n

But notice where it starts.<\/p>\n

It starts with Democrats.<\/p>\n

Affordability starts with voters.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a fundamental difference.<\/p>\n

Most Americans aren\u2019t waking up asking whether Washington has embraced democratic socialism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re asking why groceries still cost so much.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re wondering why buying a home feels out of reach.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re looking at insurance bills, child care costs and monthly budgets.<\/p>\n

Democrats have decided that every road leads back to that conversation.<\/p>\n

Republicans are still asking voters to connect the dots across half a dozen different conversations.<\/p>\n

That may be enough.<\/p>\n

It may not.<\/p>\n

But with only 100 days left, the biggest advantage Democrats have isn\u2019t necessarily on the issues.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s that they\u2019ve decided what the election is about.<\/p>\n

Republicans haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n

And in politics, the party that defines the election usually starts with the upper hand.<\/p>\n

The next 100 days won\u2019t simply determine who wins the House<\/a> or Senate. They\u2019ll determine which story voters carry with them into the voting booth.<\/p>\n

Because elections are rarely won by the party with the longest list of arguments.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re won by the party that gives people the simplest way to understand the moment they\u2019re living through.<\/p>\n
