The Miami Dolphins<\/a> are in a rebuilding year, and anyone with eyes can see that based on the offseason coaching, personnel and roster moves. But head coach Jeff Halfley doesn’t want to hear that.<\/p>\n

Say that.<\/p>\n

Admit that.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know how you can have a conversation with a competitive player or a competitive coach, and have it sit right with them, where they were just going to say I was going to rebuild this year,” Halfley said on Thursday. “…It’s just not the mentality of any competitor who’s made it to this level or any coach that’s made it to this level.<\/p>\n

“I mean, whether it’s practice or whether it’s a drill, I think we all want to win it. And in our mindset is, we need to get better. We need to develop. And everything that we do is going to be about competing to get better throughout the process and we want to win.<\/p>\n

” So I just don’t think any player or any coach is going to sit here and say, ‘I’m just going to throw in the towel and just rebuild.’ So that’s probably why no one’s hearing that. I think if you had a group of players saying that, then I think we got the wrong players.”<\/p>\n

This is a message Halfley has been delivering within the organization throughout the offseason. It’s a message staffers and even the public relations department has for months been privately sharing with anyone who will listen.<\/p>\n

The Dolphins don’t want to say they’re rebuilding.<\/p>\n

Even though, you know, they’re rebuilding.<\/p>\n

We know they are because a team that wants to win now doesn’t move on from good players, especially if they’re young.<\/p>\n

But the Dolphins did that in trading three-time 1,000-yard receiver Jaylen Waddle to Denver even though he would be their best wideout now. They did that in trading five-time Pro Bowl player Minkah Fitzpatrick<\/a> even though he would be the best safety on their roster now.<\/p>\n

They did that in releasing Bradley Chubb after he led the team in sacks last season.<\/p>\n

BRONCOS ACQUIRE WADDLE AS NEW PIECE FOR SUPER BOWL RUN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

And we get it. The Dolphins made tactical moves to clean up the salary cap.<\/p>\n

But the strategic objective of that was to be competitive next year and maybe be very good in a couple of years.<\/p>\n

This year? The club signed or re-signed over a dozen players to one-year contracts. They added players like veteran Josh Uche for the short-term to maybe, hopefully, fill a gap until the team finds a better pass-rush answer.<\/p>\n

“He’s a guy that’s tasted success in this league. And I think he’s probably been humbled and motivated by last year, you know, being inactive for a bunch,” Halfley said. “But seeing a guy, like a lot of guys that we have on this roster right now, he is at the point of his career where it’s a prove-it year.<\/p>\n

“It’s prove-it year for himself. It’s a chance for him to say, I can still do this.”<\/p>\n

Halfley could easily say that about a dozen players on his roster who have either never contributed in the NFL<\/a> or want to show they can still contribute after failing to do so recently.<\/p>\n

And amid this reality, his message is the Dolphins want to win \u2013 as in now.<\/p>\n

But here’s one thing posture brings: A different evaluation.<\/p>\n

If Halfley, and the entire organization by extension, keep insisting this is not a rebuilding year, then expectations change.<\/p>\n

It’s acceptable for a rebuilding team to win only four, five, six games. It’s a rebuild, after all.<\/p>\n

But a team that states 2026 is much more than “just a rebuild,” must do more. Fans should expect more. Teams like that need to win more than they lose or they’ve failed in the eyes of some fans.<\/p>\n

So this gets tricky.<\/p>\n

Halfley, in the first year of his first NFL head coaching job, has to tread carefully to keep expectations high for his players while not raising them and hopes too high outside the team.<\/p>\n
