Kelly Ripa’s<\/a> painful dental surgery sidelined the daytime TV staple, forcing the famously chatty host into an unusual recovery that left husband Mark Consuelos revealing she couldn’t even speak.<\/p>\n

During Monday’s show, Consuelos revealed Ripa had undergone gum graft surgery.<\/p>\n

“Kelly sends her love,”\u00a0the “Live with Kelly and Mark” co-host told guest Nick Jonas<\/a>. “Kelly had a little bit \u2013 well, it\u2019s not a\u00a0little \u2013 she had a gum graft surgery.”<\/p>\n

Gum graft surgery typically helps correct thinning or receding gums, according to Cleveland Clinic. Consuelos admitted Ripa had been recommended to have the surgery years ago.<\/p>\n

“Her dentist said five years ago, \u2018You can do it in about five years,\u2019” Consuelos recalled. “And she joked, \u2018I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d still be on the air in five years!\u2019 “<\/p>\n

Consuelos revealed her lengthy recovery process includes not talking.<\/p>\n

“Wow. That\u2019s got to be the hardest thing she\u2019s ever done,” Jonas joked.<\/p>\n

Describing Ripa as “such a great conversationalist,” Consuelos hinted he might be having trouble having the talk show host follow doctor’s orders.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m trying to keep her to follow the rules, follow the directions,” he said.<\/p>\n

As Ripa recovered at home, Consuelos said the toughest part wasn’t the pain \u2013 it was convincing the famously curious TV host to stop checking on her healing gums and let the procedure do its work.<\/p>\n

“Last night she was like, \u2018Can you look?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018I\u2019m not pulling your lip down,\u2019” Consuelos said. Ripa instead got into position so Consuelos could check without touching her lip. “So I\u2019m down there like, \u2018It looks great!\u2019 “<\/p>\n

The longtime actor said the surgery was especially alarming because Ripa rarely complains about pain, making this recovery stand out from any previous trip to the dentist.<\/p>\n

“Yeah, it\u2019s painful,” he told Jonas. “But she famously doesn\u2019t feel pain. When she goes into the dentist, she doesn\u2019t use the novocaine. But this one hurts, so I know it\u2019s bad.”<\/p>\n

Ripa’s notoriously high pain tolerance led Jonas to marvel at just how much women can endure. He revealed his own wife, Danielle Jonas, has a similar ability to brush off pain.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019ll be like, \u2018Are you in pain?\u2019 She\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m fine!\u2019 Come to find out her foot\u2019s, like, falling off,” Jonas joked.<\/p>\n

“Well, they do have kids<\/a>. They deliver kids,” Consuelos added. “We\u2019re not built for that.”<\/p>\n

Ripa is not expected to return to “Live” for the next week, a representative for the show confirmed to People<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
