An elderly man reportedly died Thursday after suffering a medical emergency on a popular hiking trail in California’s<\/a> Sequoia National Park.<\/p>\n

The victim was identified as 79-year-old John Francis Oliver of Henderson, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office said, according to Your Central Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Oliver was found along the General Sherman Tree Trail, a one-mile path that leads to the world’s largest living tree, the General Sherman Tree, according to the outlet, citing the National Park Service (NPS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

First responders rendered emergency medical aid to Oliver at the scene, but the man was eventually pronounced dead in the park, according to SFGATE<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office declined to release additional details about what led to the medical emergency or the circumstances surrounding Oliver’s death “out of respect for the family,” SFGATE reported.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s cause of death has also not yet been determined.<\/p>\n

The incident came as temperatures in the region climbed into the upper 90s, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n

An extreme heat warning<\/a> was also in effect Thursday for portions of the nearby Mojave Desert and Indian Wells Valley.<\/p>\n

Thursday’s death marks the latest in a string of fatal incidents at Sequoia National Park and nearby areas in recent months.<\/p>\n

In June, a 17-year-old girl died after slipping into a fast-moving river during her first visit to Sequoia National Park, according to<\/a> a GoFundMe.<\/p>\n

In neighboring Kings Canyon National Park, a San Mateo couple drowned at Roaring River Falls in May, according to<\/a> Fox 2 San Francisco.<\/p>\n

Last summer, NPS also said<\/a> a local missing hiker, 36, was found dead in Sequoia National Park.<\/p>\n
