A top Democratic socialist leader on Sunday embraced abolishing the Senate<\/a>, national borders, prisons and more, laying bare the movement’s sweeping agenda as ideological divisions within the Democratic Party<\/a> continue to deepen.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Fox News’ Shannon Bream<\/a>, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) national co-chair Megan Romer fired off a series of “yes” and “true” responses when asked whether the organization’s platform calls for dismantling major American institutions.<\/p>\n

“[You’re advocating for] abolish[ing] the Senate?” Bream asked.<\/p>\n

“True,” Romer responded.<\/p>\n

Romer also affirmed the organization’s support for replacing the presidency and Supreme Court<\/a>, abolishing ICE, eventually eliminating national borders while granting amnesty to people living in the country illegally, defunding the Pentagon, phasing out prisons and shifting most large corporations to public ownership.<\/p>\n

She said some proposals, including abolishing borders and prisons, are part of the organization’s long-term vision.<\/p>\n

Explaining the push to eliminate the Senate, Romer called the chamber “an anachronistic institution” that was designed to limit the influence of ordinary Americans.<\/p>\n

“It comes from the British House of Lords,” she said.<\/p>\n

“The Senate was part of the system that was made to make sure that the people didn’t have too much of a say. So we want to expand Congress<\/a> significantly, but make it a unicameral legislature,” Romer said.<\/p>\n

Romer also defended the DSA’s decision to field candidates on the Democratic ballot line<\/a> despite criticism from party leaders who argue the organization should build its own political party.<\/p>\n

“The two parties have, over years and decades, created a system where ballot line access is extremely difficult for third parties,” Romer said.<\/p>\n

“We run on the Democratic ballot line where it makes sense. We run independents<\/a> sometimes where that is a viable possibility, but it’s a ballot line. What matters is what the voters think, and the voters are overwhelmingly choosing our candidates,” she said.<\/p>\n

The comments come as a growing number of prominent Democrats<\/a> warn the party risks alienating voters by embracing positions championed by the Democratic Socialists of America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
