The New York Mets<\/a> are not safe anywhere.<\/p>\n

Two years after making the National League Championship Series<\/a>, the Mets are on pace to lose 95 games, which would be their most since also losing 95 in 2003. But this season is much more embarrassing than that.<\/p>\n

The Mets came into this season overhauling a roster that choked away the best record in the league last summer, which turned in a league\u2014high $329 million payroll.<\/p>\n

But it’s been all for naught, and the president of the United States has taken notice.<\/p>\n

“The Mets have the highest salary in baseball, and they lose all the time,” President Donald Trump<\/a> said to a crowd in Georgia – probably filled with happy Atlanta Braves fans.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a>, in fact, have the most money committed to their roster, but in terms of the 2026 payrolls, the Mets are tops in the league thanks to the Dodgers’ deferrals.<\/p>\n

Trump made the comment in praising Braves Development Company CEO Mike Plant, saying the Mets should “maybe steal this guy.”<\/p>\n

“You don’t realize how good he is. There are teams where they never go down. Then you have other teams, they’ve been rebuilding for years. I don’t want to mention teams, because I know all the owners are old friends of mine, I get myself in trouble, but they’re always rebuilding. This guy never rebuilds. He just stays at the top. He’s amazing,” Trump said. “And then he loses the best player. He loses a great first baseman (Freddie Freeman<\/a>), I would say great first baseman, and they keep going along and they get things for the first baseman. And he was really good, Dodgers got him. But I watched the Braves for years and they’ve done such a great job.”<\/p>\n

The Mets payroll is headlined by Juan Soto’s<\/a> record-breaking $765 million contract over 15 years that he signed in December 2024. Francisco Lindor is also making nearly $34 million.<\/p>\n

The Mets let\u00a0Pete Alonso<\/a>\u00a0and Edwin Diaz walk in free agency while trading Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo, and brought in Jorge Polanco, Luis Robert, Bo Bichette, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. However, despite the Mets ranking 27th in batting average, 26th in runs scored, and 28th in OPS, while their rotation has the ninth-worst ERA in the big leagues.<\/p>\n

Polanco is hitting .165 in an injury-riddled season, and Robert is hitting .211 after injuries. Bichette is on pace for the worst season of his career, Semien is hitting .209 with a .606 OPS, and Williams owns a 4.54 ERA (Weaver’s 1.98 ERA is a lone bright spot).<\/p>\n

New York is said to have just about everyone available in the trade market, except Soto and some young talent on the big league roster.<\/p>\n

The Mets are 43-60 and are 17.0 games back of the Braves in the NL East.<\/p>\n
