Things look a little different at ESPN today. Haven’t you heard?<\/p>\n

The World Wide Leader laid off dozens of employees this week, including Ryan Clark<\/a>, Cam Newton, Tom Pelissero and Karl Ravech.<\/a> Others were let go as well, but those are some of the big names circulating the internet as of today.<\/p>\n

This isn’t the first round of layoffs at ESPN \u2014 or for any company. Frankly, this is at least the third or fourth round of layoffs at ESPN since I started working at OutKick four years ago. It’s become a yearly story at this point.<\/p>\n

Anyway, something else that’s become a yearly topic is why <\/em>ESPN is letting folks go, with several people placing the blame on Pat McAfee. That’s right. Pat McAfee!<\/p>\n

He earns roughly $30 million a year, and is reportedly in negotiations with ESPN to double that moving forward. Obviously, those numbers are going to raise some eyebrows when these layoffs happen.<\/p>\n

NFL Hall of Famer JJ Watt joined the “progrum” on Tuesday, and … didn’t shy away from the elephant in the room:<\/p>\n

“Slow, slow news day over there on the ESPN airwaves, huh?” Watt said to begin the interview. “I mean, besides the fact that you\u2019re getting $100 million\u2026 Did they keep anybody? Or is everybody fired to pay you? I\u2019m trying to figure that out.”<\/p>\n

Goodness gracious. Just a vicious way to start an interview. Brutal stuff.<\/p>\n

Look, it was obviously in jest, and McAfee responded by laughing it off. He’s not stupid. He’s not immune to the narrative on social media right now.<\/p>\n

“We do not appreciate that,” he said. “That is the narrative, and I\u2019m certainly taking it on the shins. The boys and I are very proud of the work that we have done. Thanks.”<\/p>\n

Here’s the bottom line: ESPN views Pat McAfee as an asset. The network has put him everywhere <\/em>since the two partnered up a few years back.<\/p>\n

He’s on College GameDay<\/a>. He’s on the sidelines for the biggest college football games, sometimes even getting his own simulcast feed. His show is on the main channel every day. He travels to big sporting events outside<\/em> of football for his show.<\/p>\n

Just last week, he was at the Home Run Derby, which was notable given it was the first year it wasn’t <\/em>on ESPN in decades.<\/p>\n

It’s clear that ESPN believes in McAfee and wants to continue to invest in him. It’s probably not a bad investment to make given he’s arguably the biggest all-around sports personality in the media.<\/p>\n

He’s also self-made. ESPN did not create Pat McAfee. ESPN invested in McAfee \u2014 and his team \u2014 years ago. Since he joined College GameDay in 2022, ratings have gone up. It’s not all because of McAfee, of course, but that’s not a coincidence.<\/p>\n

“The first time we licensed the show through ESPN, one of these happened, we got blamed,” McAfee said later in the interview. “This time, we\u2019re getting blamed as well. Which I guess I can understand, but I mean, there\u2019s billions and billions of dollars in these companies, and hard decisions have to get made.<\/p>\n

“And we don\u2019t like any of them, and we hope we\u2019re an asset to the company going forward.”<\/p>\n

And that’s what McAfee is to ESPN \u2014 an asset. A big one. He’s proven that, time and time again, since joining the network. Think about all the big interviews you see out of the World Wide Leader right now … where do they come from?<\/p>\n

The Pat McAfee show. Not First Take. Not NFL Live. Not SportsCenter.<\/p>\n

McAfee’s radio show.<\/p>\n

Think of all the viral moments we see every Saturday during the fall. Where do they come from?<\/p>\n

McAfee’s kicking segment during College GameDay. Or McAfee’s outlandish intro during the opening scene.<\/p>\n

Like it or hate it \u2014 and I know plenty of folks hate it \u2014 it’s clearly working.<\/p>\n

Pat McAfee didn’t cost Ryan Clark his job<\/a>. Ryan Clark lost his job because he brought nothing to the table for ESPN, beyond an occasional headache because he said something stupid.<\/p>\n

ESPN chose to cut ties with a liability, and put more money into an asset. That’s not a new or novel concept.<\/p>\n

It’s how businesses have been run for years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
