Though it is well diversified, there are times when it feels that the diversifications itself may be the bane of the company. However, some good news has finally started to tickle down from the company when it declared its fourth quarter as well as full fiscal 2013 financial reports.<\/p>\n
The Earnings Preview:<\/b><\/p>\n
General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) reported revenues of $40.4 billion, an increase of 3% on y-on-y basis. They were also higher by $0.02 billion than the analysts\u2019 expectations. The earnings per share of $0.53 were also in line of the analysts\u2019 expectation; they were in fact higher by 20% over the same period last year.<\/p>\n
Revenues for the full fiscal 2013 were flat at $146 billion as compared to the financial year 2012. Operating earnings per share, however, registered an increase of 9% to $1.64.<\/p>\n
If we look at the demographics of the results, orders were up by 8% in the U.S., 3% in Europe but by 13% in the growth markets. The growth markets or the emerging economics showed consistent performance with orders increasing by 17% in Latin America and 18% in Russia. China, which has managed to spoil many conglomerates\u2019 parties, also saw an increase of 13%. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) had decided to focus in the virgin Sub-Saharan markets and was amply rewarded by a hefty 59% growth in orders. However, this growth was also on a small base but still is important from the long-term prespective.<\/p>\n
Cost Cutting & Acquisitions To The Fore?<\/b><\/p>\n
Another positive for the company was that six of the seven segments reported an increase in earnings. Like most of the companies, GE is also focusing of cost rationalization. Good times make companies accumulate excess fats and like animals does, this should be shed during the lean periods. What is of significance is the fact the General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) spent almost $9 billion in 2013 on acquisitions alone.<\/p>\n
