{"id":137960,"date":"2026-07-05T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/americans-once-survived-on-squirrel-pie-whiskey-and-homemade-cheese-after-british-imports-dried-up-137960"},"modified":"2026-07-05T08:00:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T12:00:42","slug":"americans-once-survived-on-squirrel-pie-whiskey-and-homemade-cheese-after-british-imports-dried-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/americans-once-survived-on-squirrel-pie-whiskey-and-homemade-cheese-after-british-imports-dried-up-137960","title":{"rendered":"Americans once survived on squirrel pie, whiskey and homemade cheese after British imports dried up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A new documentary exploring Revolutionary-era food has given host Capri Cafaro a firsthand look at the ingenuity that helped colonial Americans adapt, survive and ultimately break from Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p>As Americans celebrate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/america-250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nation&#8217;s 250th anniversary<\/a>, Cafaro said the biggest lesson from making the &#8220;America the Bountiful: America&#8217;s 250th Anniversary Special&#8221; was seeing how colonists transformed local crops, livestock and wild game into a self-sustaining food system when European imports were no longer reliable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Food<\/a> is a really interesting anchor, culturally,&#8221; Cafaro told Fox News Digital. &#8220;It has an opportunity to tell infinite stories from economics to agriculture to the environment to science.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foxnews.com\/food-drink\/george-washingtons-1757-beer-recipe-brought-back-life-ahead-americas-250th-birthday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>GEORGE WASHINGTON&#8217;S 1757 BEER RECIPE BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE AHEAD OF AMERICA&#8217;S 250TH BIRTHDAY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In planning the show&#8217;s 250th anniversary special, Cafaro said she was &#8220;really looking to identify the ways in which colonial settlers were able to adapt in North America without being able to rely on European imports.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She traveled to landmarks of colonial America to trace the roots of foods that are integral to the nation&#8217;s palate today, including cheese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/drinks\/spirits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and whiskey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Colonists turned milk into cheese because fresh milk spoiled quickly. They used the byproducts of the grain they milled for many different things, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/beer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">including making alcohol<\/a>, Cafaro said.<\/p>\n<p>In the documentary, Cafaro is shown sampling whiskey produced as it would have been at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/travel\/george-washingtons-prayer-america-still-resonates-250-years-later\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Washington<\/a>&#8216;s Virginia estate, Mount Vernon. She described it with a laugh as &#8220;alcohol-grain-forward&#8221; and contrasted it with a whiskey suited to &#8220;more of a modern-day palate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CLICK HERE FOR MORE LIFESTYLE NEWS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most challenging experience Cafaro said she had while making the show involved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/great-outdoors\/hunting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hunting<\/a> and eating small game.<\/p>\n<p>Squirrel pie and stew were popular in 18th- and 19th-century America, she said, and are something people can still find today, particularly in the Appalachian regions of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was tough for me to be part of a squirrel-hunting process and then be faced with having to eat it,&#8221; Cafaro said. &#8220;I joked at the time that I may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/cuisines\/vegetarian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a vegetarian<\/a> in the 18th century, having to rely on small game like squirrel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many U.S. presidents, including James A. Garfield, were fans of squirrel stew and squirrel pie, Cafaro said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Colonists diversified crops, developed preservation techniques for meat and dairy and varied their hunting and trapping methods for small game, Cafaro said she learned while making the documentary.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the documentary also explores the roles Indigenous peoples, European settlers and enslaved people played in growing, harvesting and preparing food.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Indigenous people shared their knowledge of making tea from local plants and herbs with colonists.
