Vice President JD Vance<\/a> condemned the Supreme Court\u2019s “atrocious” birthright citizenship ruling, warning it could encourage more people to exploit the nation\u2019s immigration system during an interview with “The Ingraham Angle” on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court ruled against President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s effort to end birthright citizenship, finding that the Constitution guarantees automatic American citizenship for most people born in the United States.<\/p>\n

“This is a very disappointing ruling from the Supreme Court,<\/a>” Vance said. “Of course, we respect it, but we also think that it was a major, major mistake.”<\/p>\n

“One of the things that might invite is people to come here quite literally on a vacation, give birth and then all of a sudden, the child and their family have the full benefits of American citizenship. It’s just a preposterous ruling.”<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court struck down Trump\u2019s Executive Order 14160, holding that it conflicted with the 14th Amendment\u2019s guarantee of birthright citizenship.<\/p>\n

The ruling means most children born in the United States will continue to receive citizenship regardless of their parents\u2019 immigration status, an idea the Trump administration opposes.<\/p>\n

Vance identified a “silver lining” in the ruling, arguing the court\u2019s narrow opinion suggests that birthright citizenship is on thin ice.<\/p>\n

“A lot of legal experts expected this case to go the wrong direction by 7\u20132, or even 8\u20131,” Vance said.<\/p>\n

He added that the outcome of the case “effectively means that the concept of birthright citizenship, which is an absurdity to the 14th Amendment \u2014 that concept is hanging by a thread.”<\/p>\n

Vance voiced his dissent toward birthright citizenship, which has been a constitutional right in the United States for more than 150 years, claiming it rewards illegal immigrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I hate to call it birthright citizenship,” the vice president told Fox News. “It’s fundamentally a loophole that now exists in our immigration system<\/a> that rewards illegal aliens just because they have a baby in the United States while they’re in our country illegally.”<\/p>\n

The vice president said the administration is considering<\/a> “a number” of strategies to respond to the Supreme Court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

Among them are potential restrictions involving<\/a> U.S. territories such as the Northern Mariana Islands, which are located in the western Pacific near Asia.<\/p>\n

Senior administration officials have raised concerns over China sending women to the islands solely to give birth and secure U.S. citizenship<\/a> for their children in a so-called “birth tourism” scheme.<\/p>\n

“We actually have an opportunity to reverse this decision, just as we reverse so many bad decisions throughout the generations,” the vice president said.<\/p>\n

“We’ve got to fix the immigration system even more,” he continued. “We have to be even more aware of who’s coming into our country to make sure that they’re not benefiting from this atrocious Supreme Court ruling.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
