Abigail Velez was covering a USMNT watch party<\/a> in Long Beach, California, on Thursday for\u00a0ABC7 Los Angeles when she innocently started to trash talk the team\u2019s next opponent.<\/p>\n

Her obviously lighthearted comments came as she was wrapping up following the USA\u2019s loss to Turkey<\/a>. She was looking ahead to the next opponent, Bosnia and Herzegovina, when she said, “The next round, Team USA will play Bosnia next Wednesday and one thing about Bosnia, I could not point out where it is on a map.”<\/p>\n

Velez continued, “I don\u2019t know the first thing about Bosnia and I don\u2019t want to know because Team USA, we\u2019re back, we\u2019re better than ever. That\u2019s next Wednesday. Get prepared, Bosnia, because you don\u2019t want it, you don\u2019t want it like that, but you\u2019re gonna get it. That\u2019s next Wednesday.”<\/p>\n

Classic trash talk or so you would think. This was obviously not an attack on the people of Bosnia. It\u2019s in the context of an upcoming World Cup match, but that didn\u2019t keep some from getting their fanny packs in a bunch.\u00a0Apparently enough people for her to issue an apology.<\/p>\n

USA WORLD CUP SOCCER TEAM HAS ITS LIKELY OPPONENT FOR ROUND OF 32, AND IT BODES QUITE WELL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Among those appearing to have their fanny packs in a bunch was the Bosnian national soccer<\/a> team\u00a0who tweeted<\/u><\/a>, “My goodness, the stereotypes write themselves\u2026\u2026”<\/p>\n

That tweet includes Velez\u2019s comments and has been seen more than 10 million times, at the time that I’m writing this. I would have considered that a funny response to Velez\u2019s trash talk if they hadn\u2019t\u00a0provided an update<\/u><\/a>, seemingly enjoying the fact that she had apologized.<\/p>\n

“In a poor effort to have a little fun with World Cup competition, I took it too far and made a thoughtless comment on air that was insensitive and inappropriate. I apologize to the people of Bosnia and the Bosnian Football team,”\u00a0Velez said in a statement<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

“The World Cup<\/a> is supposed to be about uniting communities around the world, and my comment didn\u2019t reflect that spirit. Wishing all the teams the very best as they continue their World Cup journey.”<\/p>\n

The stereotypes write themselves, indeed. There are too many soft people who can\u2019t take a joke and who can\u2019t handle a little trash talk at their expense without being offended and demanding an apology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
