College<\/a> graduation speeches say a lot about the state of higher education \u2014 sometimes without intending to.\u00a0For every country singer who\u00a0can “wow”\u00a0the audience\u00a0with a message rooted in gratitude, family, and purpose,\u00a0there are two,\u00a0perhaps three, speakers who are disinvited for speaking their minds or\u00a0forced\u00a0to endure\u00a0student walkouts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Such is life on campus today: A few schools overperform and offer students\u00a0a\u00a0meaningful\u00a0experience\u00a0but far too many award young Americans\u00a0with little more than expensive disappointment<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Singer-songwriter\u00a0Eric Church\u00a0earned rave reviews\u00a0this year\u00a0for his speech at the University of North Carolina\u00a0with his\u00a0focus on family and the importance of deep relationships.\u00a0His message was refreshing. Conservatives have\u00a0spent\u00a0decades\u00a0warning\u00a0that\u00a0America\u2019s\u00a0universities\u00a0were abandoning their responsibility to guide students toward maturity, virtue, meaning, and purpose.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

I LEAD A UNIVERSITY. HIGHER EDUCATION IS FAILING STUDENTS \u2014 CONGRESS IS RIGHT TO ACT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

For those who\u00a0think\u00a0that critique is\u00a0overstated,\u00a0consider the\u00a0chaos\u00a0surrounding\u00a0graduation ceremonies in 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At New York University, students unironically booed and some walked out\u00a0on Jonathan Haidt,\u00a0the\u00a0social psychologist whose work has exposed,\u00a0among other things,\u00a0the cancel culture<\/a>\u00a0entrenched\u00a0in higher education.\u00a0South Carolina State officials disinvited their own\u00a0lieutenant governor, Pamela Everett,\u00a0citing\u00a0her prior comments\u00a0criticizing\u00a0diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The mob wins again.<\/p>\n

Similar withdrawals, either disinvitations or decisions to step aside after student outrage campaigns, occurred this year at Drexel’s College of Computing and Infomatics, Rutgers and Georgetown’s law school, to name a few.<\/p>\n

Shouldn\u2019t college campuses be\u00a0places where\u00a0robust debate\u00a0flourishes?\u00a0As a distinguished cadre of\u00a0researchers, professors,\u00a0and college presidents explain in Higher Education in America:\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0Worse than You Think,\u00a0ideological\u00a0disagreement\u00a0is\u00a0too often met with\u00a0cancelation,\u00a0intimidation,\u00a0and\u00a0even\u00a0violence.<\/p>\n

If DEI\u00a0bureaucracies\u00a0were\u00a0intended to\u00a0cultivate\u00a0tolerance and protect a diversity of backgrounds and ideas, as these offices\u00a0generally claim, they have failed\u00a0spectacularly.\u00a0Meanwhile,\u00a0the\u00a0overwhelming ideological conformity\u00a0among\u00a0college faculty has starved students of rigorous debate and the\u00a0honest\u00a0pursuit of truth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As\u00a0noted in the volume\u2019s\u00a0introduction,\u00a0“The great project of liberal education, designed to inculcate knowledge of the truth, appreciation of the beautiful, and the civic virtue necessary to advance both, has been replaced by bureaucracies, activism, anti-Western ideology, and empty credentialism.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Colleges and universities should inspire students\u00a0to\u00a0seek\u00a0truth. Delivering that culture requires administrators\u00a0with\u00a0the courage to defend\u00a0academic seriousness and who will lead with moral clarity. Policies and mission statements mean nothing unless they reinforce a community strong enough to resist mob intimidation.<\/p>\n

Lawmakers can pass\u00a0reforms\u00a0and police can remove agitators, but\u00a0campus\u00a0culture will not recover\u00a0unless university officials themselves are committed to defending truth and rejecting every form of racism. Without that conviction at the top, the fight to restore sanity on campus will remain just that\u2014a fight.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We have each served in different capacities in higher education,\u00a0Kevin as\u00a0professor and college president\u00a0and Chris as a board member. And we have\u00a0had the privilege of\u00a0delivering\u00a0commencement speeches\u00a0over the years\u00a0and find it disturbing that\u00a0so many graduates now receive diplomas while\u00a0remaining\u00a0fearful of ideas that challenge their own assumptions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A healthy university culture requires more than credentialing. It requires the\u00a0formation\u00a0of citizens capable of reasoned\u00a0argument, moral judgment, and self-government.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trustees, presidents, and administrators\u00a0must lead a genuine moral reset on their campuses.\u00a0They\u00a0should\u00a0use every tool available to cultivate\u00a0institutions\u00a0where\u00a0students can learn, debate, and grow in virtue.<\/p>\n

That\u00a0starts with\u00a0restoring\u00a0high\u00a0expectations for\u00a0academic performance\u00a0(notice Harvard\u2019s recent\u00a0decision to\u00a0cap\u00a0the number of A\u2019s that will be awarded to students next year);\u00a0the\u00a0utter and complete rejection of\u00a0racial discrimination\u00a0on campus; and\u00a0the ongoing simplification and eventual\u00a0sunset\u00a0of the\u00a0federal\u00a0student loan\u00a0system. The second Donald Trump administration has\u00a0already\u00a0taken excellent steps in this regard\u00a0through better engagement between the U.S. Departments of Education and Treasury.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

If America is to step fully into its Golden Age, we cannot continue graduating generations of students who have been taught to fear truth rather than pursue it. The next generation deserves institutions worthy of their talent, patriotism<\/a>, and potential. Rebuilding those institutions must begin now.\u00a0<\/p>\n
