The headlines say Donald Trump<\/a> “stormed” out of his interview with NBC\u2019s Kristen Welker.<\/p>\n

The reality was a little more subtle.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy to second-guess. The natural tension that comes with interviewing any politician for television \u2013 but especially this president, who can dominate this kind of sit-down \u2013 calls for split-second judgments.<\/p>\n

Having interviewed Trump<\/a> numerous times \u2013 especially in a high-stakes session two weeks before the election, at his invitation \u2013 gives me a certain perspective.<\/p>\n

TRUMP STORMS OFF ‘MEET THE PRESS’ INTERVIEW, RIPS WELKER, ABC, CBS, CNN AS ‘CROOKED’<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Things did not end well with Welker:<\/p>\n

“You\u2019re crooked, your press is crooked, And \u2018Meet the Press\u2019 is crooked.”<\/p>\n

“To be fair, I\u2019m not crooked.”<\/p>\n

“Really? Well, you play right into their hands then. You\u2019re either crooked or you\u2019re stupid.”<\/p>\n

Geez.<\/p>\n

TRUMP RIPS OBAMA\u2019S \u2018STUPID\u2019 IRAN DEAL IN CLASH WITH KRISTEN WELKER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

And then: “Sorry. Let\u2019s call it quits because I\u2019ve had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time.”<\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty sure Trump has never called me darling. He does seem to treat certain women differently.<\/p>\n

The other day he ripped CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins for asking a question, saying she\u2019s “beautiful” but he never sees her smile and that she has “hatred in her eyes.” Even in the Welker interview, Trump said ABC, CBS and CNN were also crooked.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s close to a no-win situation. You prepare a bunch of blue cards, knowing you won\u2019t get to everything. No matter how wide-ranging the interview, armchair critics will whack you:\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Yeah, why didn\u2019t you ask that?<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

My approach is that you\u2019ve got to let the guest speak, but jump in when it\u2019s becoming what\u00a0senators call a filibuster. And do some real-time fact-checking when you can.<\/p>\n

Where Welker fell into a trap, in my view, is that she interrupted Trump so often that it looked like she was debating him.<\/p>\n

Now there were times when Welker\u2019s persistence paid off. When she asked about the $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” that even Republican members of Congress are denouncing, there was this exchange.<\/p>\n

WELKER:<\/strong> Just to be very clear, are you backing off the fund completely, as your acting Attorney General Todd Blanche<\/a> has said, or are you looking for another avenue to revive the fund?<\/p>\n

TRUMP:<\/strong> So let me explain what the fund is. People have been hurt so badly by radical left lunatics that worked for the Biden administration and Sleepy Joe. They\u2019re vicious.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They\u2019re violent, what they did to people. And, of course, they went after me more than anybody else. They raided Mar-a-Lago and all the other things. But people have been badly hurt. They\u2019ve committed suicide. They\u2019ve lost their jobs. They’ve lost their families.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve lost their wives. They\u2019ve lost everything. They\u2019ve lost everything over a fake weaponization of government. Now, let me just tell you\u2014”<\/p>\n

WELKER: <\/strong>So are you looking for a way to revive it?<\/p>\n

TRUMP: <\/strong>I wouldn\u2019t be inclined to say so, but I have to see it. I can tell you this: 97% of those people, you look at them, the FBI or whoever it was, cause you had a lot of crooked cops, you had dirty cops. Comey was a dirty cop. A guy like Bolton was a dirty cop.”<\/p>\n

WELKER: <\/strong>But there is no evidence that people who\u2014”<\/p>\n

TRUMP: <\/strong>Wait a minute. You think Comey was a straight cop?<\/p>\n

WELKER: <\/strong>We had 170 people who pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers.<\/p>\n

TRUMP: <\/strong>Comey was a dirty cop.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“But the people who assaulted police officers,” Welker shot back.<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen with the weaponization fund. I love the idea, because people like you, the fake dirty press, the crooked press, people like stupid Biden, he\u2019s not smart enough to know what\u2019s going on, but people that surrounded him, surrounded his beautiful Resolute Desk in the Oval Office<\/a>, what they did to the lives of people, they destroyed people. They sent people to jail who did nothing wrong.”<\/p>\n

Welker interjected again. “Just to be very clear, there\u2019s no evidence of what you\u2019re saying.”<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s a lot of evidence. Listen to me\u2026 There\u2019s tremendous evidence. There\u2019s nothing but evidence.”<\/p>\n

“Well, it\u2019s not been presented in a court of law.”<\/p>\n

“The election was rigged,” Trump proclaimed. “It was a dirty election. And it\u2019s happening again right now in California.”<\/p>\n

“Do you have evidence to support that?”<\/p>\n

“All I have to do is look.”<\/p>\n

“But that\u2019s not evidence.”<\/p>\n

“Well, it\u2019s not been presented in a court of law,” Welker said.<\/p>\n

“The election was rigged,” Trump declared.<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s no evidence of that, sir.”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s as if she worried about media criticism that she was somehow going easy on him if she wasn\u2019t seen challenging him every few seconds.<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s where the final six minutes became an interrupt-a-thon.<\/p>\n

WELKER:<\/strong> All right, this is, just to be very clear, there\u2019s no evidence of what you\u2019re saying, but let me ask about Todd Blanche.<\/p>\n

TRUMP:<\/strong> There\u2019s a lot of evidence.<\/p>\n

WELKER: <\/strong>Let me ask about Todd Blanche.<\/p>\n

TRUMP: <\/strong>Listen \u2014 listen to me \u2014 listen to me.<\/p>\n

WELKER:<\/strong> Let\u2019s talk about Todd Blanche.<\/p>\n

TRUMP: <\/strong>There\u2019s tremendous evidence. There\u2019s nothing but evidence.<\/p>\n

WELKER: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s not been presented in a court of law.<\/p>\n

TRUMP: <\/strong>The election was rigged. It was a dirty election.<\/p>\n

WELKER: <\/strong>Mr. President \u2013<\/p>\n

TRUMP: <\/strong>And it\u2019s happening again right now in California.<\/p>\n

WELKER: <\/strong>\u2014 you\u2019ve never presented evidence \u2013<\/p>\n

My view is that the viewers are smart. They know when a guest is ducking the question or changing the subject\u2013heavily influenced, of course, by partisan loyalties. You don\u2019t have to keep pounding it into them. Welker could have explained this to viewers after the taping.<\/p>\n

One last bit of perspective.<\/p>\n

By the time that last segment went off the rails, the president and the moderator had talked in a Wisconsin barn<\/a> for roughly an hour, about Iran, nuclear issues, the economy, gas prices, struggling farmers and more. He had given her plenty of time. They were interrupted by rain.<\/p>\n

Welker asked about his campaign pledge to end foreign wars.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I didn\u2019t guarantee no war,” Trump insisted. “Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?”\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are several examples from the 2024 campaign. At an August rally in Pennsylvania that year, for instance, the candidate said: “Under Trump, we will have no more wars, no more disruptions, and we will have prosperity and peace for all.”\u00a0 Again, that could have been added in an on-camera tag.<\/p>\n

One thing is certain: Kristen Welker\u2019s interview made plenty of news, so that should make her and her network rather happy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
