If you listen to politicians like\u00a0Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/a>\u00a0and New York Democrat Rep.\u00a0Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, there\u2019s a constant drumbeat. The rich don\u2019t pay their “fair share.” and we don\u2019t need any “oligarchs.”\u00a0These are powerful soundbites. They are also among the most intellectually lazy phrases in modern economics.<\/p>\n

Because here\u2019s the real question no one answers:\u00a0what exactly is “fair?”<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with the facts which many people don\u2019t like to discuss and not feelings.<\/p>\n

According to data from the\u00a0Internal Revenue Service\u00a0and the\u00a0Tax Foundation, the top 1% of earners already pay roughly\u00a040% or more of all federal income taxes<\/a>. The top 10%? Closer to\u00a070%. Meanwhile, nearly half of Americans pay little to no federal income tax each year.<\/p>\n

So, when someone says the wealthy don\u2019t pay enough, what they\u2019re really saying is:\u00a0It\u2019s fair that lots of people pay zero and that\u00a0they want the rich to pay even more<\/a> than that share.<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s where the conversation gets completely detached from reality, because\u00a0federal income tax is just the starting line, not the finish line, when we talk about overall taxation.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s walk through what “rich” Americans actually pay in taxes.<\/p>\n

DOGE REVEALS WHAT YOU GET FOR THE HALF\u00a0MILLION\u00a0YOU’LL PAY IN TAXES OVER\u00a0YOUR\u00a0LIFETIME<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

This is the headline number everyone debates. Top earners face marginal rates up to 37%, before you even layer in surtaxes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Live in high-tax states<\/a> like\u00a0California\u00a0or\u00a0New York, and you can add another\u00a010%\u201314%\u00a0on top of that federal number. Suddenly, you\u2019re pushing toward a combined rate that rivals some European countries.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Congratulations, you\u2019re writing a check every year just to keep it. In states like\u00a0New Jersey<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Texas, property taxes can easily hit\u00a0$10,000 to $30,000+ annually\u00a0for higher-value homes. We are talking 1% to 2% of your home value beyond some states that have personal property taxes.<\/p>\n

Every time you spend, you\u2019re taxed again. In places like\u00a0Tennessee<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Washington, combined sales taxes approach\u00a010%. That\u2019s post-income-tax money being taxed all over again. This sparks the great debate of a fair tax or having a VAT tax or what some will call a consumption tax.<\/p>\n

Invest wisely? You\u2019ll pay for that as well. Federal capital gains rates, plus the Net Investment Income Tax, can push you over\u00a023.8%, before state taxes take another bite. This is after you tax after-tax money, invest it well, and then pay tax again. This also affects business owners who build their business for years and pay tax on distributable income all along the way only to potentially be taxed at the highest marginal tax rate when they sell the business that created jobs for people for decades.<\/p>\n

Build wealth over a lifetime? The government may take another bite out of the apple when you pass it on to your heirs. While this doesn\u2019t affect as many people, it can be significant for wealthy families.<\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s pause and ask the captain obvious question:\u00a0At what point is it enough?<\/p>\n

Is “fair” when the top 1% pays 50% of all taxes? 60%? 80%? Does any politician who makes these outlandish statements have a real number? No. The reason? You can\u2019t get blood from a stone from people who don\u2019t pay at all right now.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re already operating in a system where such a small percentage of Americans fund the majority of government spending<\/a>.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON POST ARGUES THERE’S ‘LITTLE TO GAIN BY RAISING TAXES ON THE RICH,’ RATES ALREADY HIGH ENOUGH<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what makes this debate even more frustrating, and that is,\u00a0“fair share” is never defined.\u00a0It\u2019s a moving target. The more you pay, the more you\u2019re told you should pay.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not tax policy<\/a>, that\u2019s the modern politics of today.<\/p>\n

And let\u2019s be clear that this isn\u2019t about defending billionaires. It\u2019s about defending\u00a0math, incentives, and, most importantly, capitalism.<\/p>\n

AMERICA’S $39 TRILLION DEBT BOMB COULD BE MORE PAINFUL THAN YOU THINK<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

When you continually raise the burden on the most productive individuals and business owners, you don\u2019t just “tax the rich.” You change the behavior of the very people who create the system. They create the jobs. They create the innovation<\/a>. They create the future of America. You discourage investment. You slow hiring. You reduce risk-taking, which are the very things that drive our GDP.<\/p>\n

America clearly needs more revenue as the time ticks toward $40 trillion of debt<\/a>. It also has a significant\u00a0spending problem.<\/p>\n

Until someone can clearly define what “fair share” actually means in real dollars, real percentages, and real outcomes, it remains exactly what it is today.<\/p>\n

A soundbite and a slogan. And those two things don\u2019t balance our budget.<\/p>\n
