A surtax is a tax layered on top of an existing income tax, not a replacement for it.<\/p>\n

In plain English, here\u2019s how it works: You pay your normal state income tax, and then once your income crosses a certain threshold, the state adds an extra percentage on top of that same income.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the difference between climbing a ladder and having someone add another rung above you just when you think you\u2019ve reached the top and hit success. But why should you be penalized for being successful<\/a>? It\u2019s anti-capitalist.<\/p>\n

States use surtaxes for one simple reason: Targeted revenue without broad backlash.<\/p>\n

AMERICANS CONTINUE VOTING WITH THEIR FEET AS HIGH-TAX CITIES STRUGGLE TO RECOVER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Instead of raising taxes on everyone<\/a>, these states can:<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s walk through the five states leading this surtax movement and look at what they\u2019re really doing.<\/p>\n

Massachusetts<\/a><\/p>\n

Massachusetts is the cleanest example.<\/p>\n

If you sell a business<\/a> or have a liquidity event, that extra 4% applies directly to the gain, not your entire income, but everything above the line. What a pleasure to build a business, employ hundreds of people, and then pay even more when you sell it.<\/p>\n

California takes a slightly different<\/a> approach.<\/p>\n

That pushes the effective top rate to 13.3%<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Top rate: around 11%. Recent adjustments added higher brackets for top earners.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not always labeled as a surtax, but the effect is the same: a premium tax layer on higher income levels.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what doesn\u2019t make the political talking points:<\/p>\n

Surtaxes are not just about income. Instead, they\u2019re about timing.<\/p>\n

They hit hardest when:<\/p>\n

ROTTEN REGULATIONS: EVEN YOUR TRASH CAN’T ESCAPE CALIFORNIA’S RED TAPE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

In other words, they target moments of success, not just steady earnings. And if you are successful, you are likely to acquire more property<\/a> and pay more real estate taxes and consumption taxes where they exist. You can end up keeping barely 50 cents of every dollar you make.<\/p>\n

Cross that threshold, and your marginal tax rate jumps fast.<\/p>\n

In Massachusetts, that extra 4% can mean:<\/p>\n

$40,000 on every additional $1 million and hundreds of thousands, potentially millions, lost on a business exit<\/p>\n

And once you stack federal taxes on top, the total tax bite becomes very real.<\/p>\n

Surtaxes aren\u2019t just about taxing the rich<\/a>. They\u2019re about engineering revenue from high-value moments.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re precise. They\u2019re targeted. And they\u2019re expanding.<\/p>\n

My advice for all Americans: Be careful that this doesn\u2019t become a path for the federal government<\/a> in the future.<\/p>\n

Because once a state figures out it can quietly add another layer<\/a> at the top, it\u2019s very hard to take it away.<\/p>\n
