It sounds technical. Distant.<\/a> Like something for political insiders to argue about.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the problem.<\/p>\n

Because what people\u00a0hear\u00a0when they hear “gerrymandering” is: complicated, not for me, doesn\u2019t affect my life.<\/p>\n

We tend to think of elections<\/a> as a contest of ideas.<\/p>\n

Make your case. Win people over. Earn the outcome.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not always what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n

Every 10 years, after the census, states redraw the lines that determine voting<\/a> districts. That part makes sense; populations change.<\/p>\n

What matters is who draws the lines.<\/p>\n

Because when politicians control the map<\/a>, they don\u2019t just reflect voters.<\/p>\n

They can shape them.<\/p>\n

Not by changing votes; but by changing how those votes are grouped.<\/p>\n

Split the rest so they\u2019re spread too thin to win anywhere.<\/p>\n

Same voters. Same opinions.<\/p>\n

Different lines. Different results.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t talk about that enough.<\/p>\n

Instead, we argue about candidates and policies as if the playing field is fixed.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not.<\/p>\n

The map is part of the strategy.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t new.<\/p>\n

The term dates back to 1812, when Elbridge Gerry approved a district map in Massachusetts<\/a> so distorted it looked like something out of a political cartoon. Critics mocked it as a “Gerry-mander,” and the name stuck.<\/p>\n

Even then, people recognized what was happening.<\/p>\n

The lines weren\u2019t neutral.<\/p>\n

They were intentional.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s changed is how precise it\u2019s become.<\/p>\n

Today, mapmakers don\u2019t guess. They know.<\/p>\n

They have data that can predict behavior down to neighborhoods \u2014 sometimes down to blocks. They can design districts that look competitive<\/a> but aren\u2019t. Districts that feel fair but function as anything but.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no longer crude manipulation.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s calibrated.<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s where the conversation usually breaks down:<\/p>\n

We want this to be<\/a> someone else\u2019s problem.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not.<\/p>\n

Even the people we trust to lead us are telling on the system. Former President Barack Obama<\/a> has warned that in 2016, “We have to end the practice of drawing our congressional districts so that\u00a0politicians can pick their voters, and not the other way around.”<\/p>\n

Republicans fire back just as forcefully. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis<\/a> criticized the gerrymandering in Virginia: “Look at Virginia’s map.\u00a0 How grotesque it is.”<\/p>\n

Different parties. Different targets.<\/p>\n

Same underlying truth.<\/p>\n

This is what a power problem looks like.<\/p>\n

When one side uses it<\/a>, the other side justifies it.<\/p>\n

When both sides use it, it becomes normalized.<\/p>\n

And once it\u2019s normalized, we stop questioning it.<\/p>\n

But we should.<\/p>\n

Because this doesn\u2019t just shape outcomes \u2014 it reshapes power.<\/p>\n

It takes power away from voters<\/a> and concentrates it in the hands of the people drawing the lines.<\/p>\n

And when power concentrates, representation weakens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Not every voice carries the same weight.<\/p>\n

Not every community is heard the same way.<\/p>\n

Not every vote translates equally into influence.<\/p>\n

And we can see the impact.<\/p>\n

In Wisconsin<\/a>, for example, take 2012, when Democrats won two statewide elections and a clear popular majority yet could only secure 39 out of 99 seats in the Assembly. Or\u00a02018, when Democratic candidates for the state Assembly won 52% of the total votes cast but only took control of 35% of the seats.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Same voters. Same election.<\/a><\/p>\n

Different map \u2014 different reality.<\/p>\n

When districts are engineered to be safe, elections become less competitive<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When elections are less competitive, fewer voices matter.<\/p>\n

When fewer voices matter, people disengage or they<\/a> double down on their side because that\u2019s the only place they feel heard.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not just politics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how trust erodes.<\/p>\n

In an interview on “60 Minutes,” former Nebraska<\/a> Republican Sen. Ben Sasse warned about the dangers of tribalism and discussed how we\u2019re losing the ability to engage across differences.<\/p>\n

Gerrymandering doesn\u2019t just exist alongside that trend.<\/p>\n

It fuels it.<\/p>\n

Because if you don\u2019t need to win over a broad group of people, you don\u2019t have to listen to them.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t have to listen, you don\u2019t have to persuade.<\/p>\n

And if you don\u2019t have to persuade, you don\u2019t need common ground.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an uncomfortable paradox here.<\/p>\n

This process can help your side win.<\/p>\n

And still cost you your voice.<\/p>\n

Because a system designed to protect outcomes eventually stops needing input.<\/p>\n

Not all at once. Not in a way that makes headlines.<\/p>\n

But slowly\u2026 until participation feels less meaningful and representation feels more distant.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been talking about elections as if the fight is over ideas.<\/p>\n

Increasingly, it\u2019s also over structure.<\/p>\n

Over who gets counted.<\/p>\n

Over how those voices are translated into power.<\/p>\n

So, the real question isn\u2019t partisan.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s foundational.<\/p>\n

Are voters choosing their representatives?<\/p>\n

Or are representatives choosing their voters?<\/p>\n

Gerrymandering sounds like a technical issue.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a signal.<\/p>\n

And what it\u2019s signaling is this:<\/p>\n

The system isn\u2019t as neutral as we want to believe.<\/p>\n

We can keep treating it like background noise.<\/p>\n

Or we can recognize what it actually is: A quiet shift in who gets heard \u2014 and who doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
