Long COVID<\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0serious,\u00a0growing public health\u00a0crisis.\u00a0Though estimates vary, as many as\u00a018\u00a0million\u00a0<\/strong>Americans\u00a0may be\u00a0affected.\u00a0This is why it continues to capture the attention of Senator Todd Young, who asked Secretary Kennedy to prioritize Long Covid research in his confirmation hearing last year. This week, the Senator had the opportunity to follow up with the Secretary\u00a0at this year\u2019s budget hearing, who reported on the Department\u2019s efforts to\u00a0identify\u00a0biomarkers and committed to continuing the effort. \u00a0<\/p>\n

This is welcome news.\u00a0For most of us, the COVID-19 pandemic is a distant, though searing memory. However,\u00a0too many\u00a0Americans are still experiencing the pandemic as a daily reality, suffering from what is now known as\u00a0Long COVID.\u00a0In 2026, three years after the end of the Public Health Emergency,\u00a0Long COVID\u00a0patients\u00a0report a wide variety of symptoms,\u00a0which\u00a0include significant cognitive dysfunction, extreme fatigue<\/a>, post exertional exhaustion, autonomic dysfunction, cardiovascular conditions,\u00a0blood vessel pathology,\u00a0air hunger,\u00a0intravascular micro-coagulation, tinnitus, and other\u00a0neurological symptoms. \u00a0Unfortunately, there is no\u00a0molecular\u00a0diagnostic test, no detailed elucidation of\u00a0the\u00a0pathogenesis\u00a0of the disease,\u00a0and no definitive therapy. \u00a0<\/p>\n

I devoted my medical career\u00a0\u2014\u00a0in the US Army<\/a>, at\u00a0the\u00a0University of Maryland,\u00a0and in public service\u00a0\u2014\u00a0to fighting\u00a0deadly and debilitating diseases. \u00a0Today,\u00a0much of my medical practice is\u00a0focused on helping\u00a0patients afflicted with\u00a0Long\u00a0COVID. \u00a0The current\u00a0Long Covid crisis reminds me of my early days as a new doctor confronting AIDS before the NIH and HHS made solving AIDS a research priority.\u00a0<\/p>\n

GOVERNMENT SAYS ‘EAT BETTER’ BUT MAKES IT HARDER TO FEED YOUR FAMILY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

More than thirty years ago, I\u00a0witnessed\u00a0academia, federal laboratories,\u00a0and industry\u00a0commit\u00a0itself to solving AIDS.\u00a0These efforts converted HIV\/AIDS from a once fatal disease to a highly treatable and preventable infection,\u00a0where individuals\u00a0infected\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0HIV\u00a0virus\u00a0can expect to live a\u00a0full,\u00a0natural lifetime.\u00a0This occurred because of an aggressive focus on\u00a0what was\u00a0possible and\u00a0a major\u00a0investment in innovation\u00a0by the U.S. Government.\u00a0\u00a0Similarly, in 2020 with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, President Trump had the insight to fund Operation Warp Speed<\/a> and\u00a0engage\u00a0industry in the rapid development of a COVID vaccine.<\/p>\n

Many mistakes were made during the Covid-19 response, but developing vaccines at record speed to protect the vulnerable was not\u00a0one of them. \u00a0Given the enormity of the Long\u00a0COVID problem,\u00a0President Trump\u00a0should\u00a0now\u00a0direct his team\u00a0to accelerate innovative\u00a0research to discover and develop\u00a0an\u00a0effective\u00a0treatment for\u00a0Long COVID.<\/p>\n

Sadly,\u00a0the\u00a0NIH has\u00a0failed\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0effectively\u00a0invest\u00a0the necessary\u00a0resources\u00a0to solve our understanding of\u00a0Long COVID\u00a0pathogenesis\u00a0or\u00a0to develop a\u00a0diagnostic test\u00a0necessary to move the field forward. \u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2025, the Administration undertook a series of actions consistent with a pandemic that had run its course.\u00a0The Office for\u00a0Long COVID\u00a0Research and Practice was shuttered\u00a0and research funding was cut.\u00a0The\u00a0CDC and NIH both\u00a0stated\u00a0that they would, “no longer waste billions of taxpayer dollars responding to a non-existent pandemic that Americans moved on from years ago.”<\/p>\n

As much as we might wish this to be true, this is a mischaracterization of the current\u00a0state of the pandemic, and it is a costly one. Productivity\u00a0losses\u00a0and medical costs\u00a0associated with\u00a0Long COVID\u00a0patients\u00a0continue to cost the United States hundreds\u00a0of\u00a0billions\u00a0of dollars\u00a0each year.\u00a0Sadly, research programs that would have made a meaningful dent in these costs were cut just as they were on the cusp of yielding results that would have led to a wave of clinical trials.\u00a0Fortunately,\u00a0some\u00a0of the cuts in this research\u00a0have\u00a0been reversed.\u00a0Unfortunately,\u00a0the overall investment in\u00a0Long COVID\u00a0is inadequate.\u00a0More needs to be done.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now is the time to prioritize the discovery of novel treatments to ease the suffering of\u00a0the\u00a018\u00a0million patients\u00a0struggling with Long COVID. \u00a0Simply put, the NIH should aggressively fund Long COVID research efforts.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0applaud Secretary Kennedy\u2019s\u00a0emphasis on battling chronic disease<\/a>.\u00a0This is long overdue.\u00a0And so,\u00a0we\u00a0call on\u00a0Secretary Kennedy\u00a0and the administration to aggressively\u00a0address\u00a0Long COVID, a new and major chronic disease.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

AIDS once was a mysterious,\u00a0predominately fatal,\u00a0disease of otherwise healthy individuals. Now,\u00a0it is a treatable and\u00a0preventable\u00a0infection.\u00a0The same could be true for\u00a0Long COVID,\u00a0if we\u00a0aggressively\u00a0invest in the research and the clinical system so urgently needed.\u00a0Now is the time to empower\u00a0HHS\u00a0and industry\u00a0to make this a reality and offer\u00a0millions of suffering\u00a0Americans the chance to live unencumbered by the effects of\u00a0Long COVID.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
