It\u2019s\u00a0often said that bad ideas start in California and make their way east. But these days, Virginia<\/a> looks eager to take that crown.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0two U.S. senators from the Old Dominion\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0just embracing gun control from Richmond \u2014 they\u2019re\u00a0trying to export it nationwide.\u00a0Democrat\u00a0Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner have rolled out the so-called “Virginia Plan,” a package that would take 13 of the most extreme gun restrictions in Virginia law<\/a> and impose them on the entire country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In pushing this agenda, Kaine points to the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre as justification. But the facts tell a different story.\u00a0A comprehensive analysis of mass shootings\u00a0for more\u00a0than\u00a075\u00a0years\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0that\u00a093% of mass public shootings\u00a0occur in so-called Gun-Free Zones. That suggests the problem is not\u00a0too many guns, but\u00a0too many places\u00a0where only the attacker is armed\u00a0and victims are left defenseless.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nevertheless,\u00a0Kaine and Warner want to expand those very zones \u2014 prohibiting firearms within\u00a01,000 feet\u00a0of most hospitals and mental health<\/a> facilities. But does anyone seriously believe a sign will stop a criminal intent on murder? These attackers ignore such restrictions all the time. And\u00a0given that\u00a0most of them choose these disarmament zones,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0hard to escape the conclusion that these policies\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0deter attacks \u2014 they invite them.<\/p>\n

Take a hospital in Darby, Penn. A deranged individual entered,\u00a0intent on killing as many people as possible\u00a0in 2014.\u00a0By\u00a0the logic of gun control advocates, that attack should never have happened. The shooter was prohibited from owning firearms \u2014 he\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0pass a background check. Yet he still\u00a0obtained several guns illegally.<\/p>\n

And the hospital was exactly what gun control proponents claim to want: a place where\u00a0no\u00a0one\u00a0but\u00a0law enforcement is allowed to carry. But, in practice, those restrictions did nothing to stop him. And as the saying goes, when seconds count, police are minutes away.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0gunman\u00a0walked right past a “no guns allowed” sign and opened fire. What he\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0expect was resistance. His intended target, Dr. Lee Silverman, was a lawful permit holder who\u00a0carried\u00a0despite the hospital\u2019s policy. When the shooting began, Silverman took cover and returned fire, striking the attacker multiple times and stopping the rampage. Tragically, one life was lost \u2014 but\u00a0authorities credited him with preventing a much larger massacre.<\/p>\n

POLITICAL VIOLENCE ON THE RISE. IS IT TIME FOR A NEW DOMESTIC TERRORISM LAW?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

That\u2019s\u00a0not theory \u2014 that\u2019s reality. And yet Virginia\u2019s leaders are moving in the opposite direction.\u00a0Among the\u00a013 provisions in the Virginia Plan, the most egregious may be its ban on commonly owned firearms<\/a> \u2014 a\u00a0restriction\u00a0that\u00a0Virginia itself is\u00a0now\u00a0preparing to enforce.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The term “assault weapon” is one of the most misleading labels in this debate. But any item used to kill could be labeled an “assault weapon.”\u00a0FBI<\/a> data from the past five years\u00a0shows knives are used in about 1,500 homicides\u00a0annually \u2014 over three times more than all rifles combined.\u00a0AR-15s are only a small subset of\u00a0long guns. So why is policy fixated on one category that\u00a0represents\u00a0a tiny fraction of violent crime?\u00a0<\/p>\n

These bans don\u2019t just miss the mark \u2014 they come at a real cost. The firearms being targeted are among the most popular in the country for lawful purposes, including self-defense<\/a>. Stripping law-abiding citizens of access to effective defensive tools doesn\u2019t disarm criminals \u2014 it only tilts the balance against those who follow the law. If the goal is public safety, we should focus on violent offenders, not restrict responsible citizens.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s\u00a0something President Donald Trump<\/a> has done well. Our country is enjoying unprecedented safety \u2014 and it\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0come from new gun restrictions. It came from a shift in priorities.\u00a0In\u00a0the\u00a0first month\u00a0of his second administration, Trump\u00a0implemented measures\u00a0aimed at\u00a0deporting violent\u00a0gang members,\u00a0ending catch-and-release policies\u00a0for illegal aliens\u00a0and\u00a0getting repeat offenders off the streets.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0what real public safety looks like.<\/p>\n

The results speak for themselves. We saw the\u00a0largest single-year drop in murders<\/a>\u00a0ever recorded \u2014 without a single new\u00a0federal\u00a0gun control law. While some politicians insist more\u00a0gun\u00a0restrictions are the answer, the data shows otherwise: enforce the law,\u00a0incarcerate\u00a0violent offenders and crime falls. That should be a wake-up call for anti-gun Democrats like Kaine and Warner. But\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0likely ignore\u00a0it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the end, this\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just a policy\u00a0debate \u2014 it\u2019s\u00a0a real fight over whether this nation will respect the\u00a0Constitution or bend the knee to tyranny.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why Gun Owners of America has been engaged in court battles across the country: challenging\u00a0Illinois<\/a>\u2019 so-called assault weapons ban, pushing back against expanded\u00a0Gun-Free Zones in New York, and\u00a0preparing\u00a0a\u00a0challenge to\u00a0Virginia\u2019s new\u00a0ban on commonly owned firearms.<\/p>\n

At its core, the Virginia Plan is about exporting Virginia\u2019s experiment to the nation. But if it becomes a national model, it will also meet a national response \u2014 in the courts, in the states and in defense of the Second Amendment<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
