Beef labeled &#8220;Wagyu&#8221; can vary widely in quality, origin and value, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/21\/dining\/wagyu-beef.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The New York Times recently reported<\/a>, and customers can be at risk of getting ripped off.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When consumers see &#8216;Wagyu&#8217; on a menu or label today, they generally think of an elevated, premium eating experience \u2014 exceptional tenderness, rich flavor and that melt-in-your-mouth quality driven by high marbling,&#8221; said Stephanie Hamilton, a Colorado-based brand manager at JBS Imports, a major global beef producer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/travis-kelce-patrick-mahomes-steakhouse-blasted-over-650-dinner-the-worst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TRAVIS KELCE AND PATRICK MAHOMES&#8217; STEAKHOUSE BLASTED OVER $650 DINNER: &#8216;THE WORST&#8217;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It signals indulgence and affluence, and many people understand that Wagyu cattle are different from conventional beef cattle,&#8221; Hamilton told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p>But that perception doesn&#8217;t always match reality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s often misunderstood,&#8221; Hamilton added. &#8220;Many consumers assume Wagyu automatically means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/cuisines\/japanese\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beef imported from Japan<\/a> \u2014 when in reality, most Wagyu available in the U.S. is raised here and reflects Japanese genetics rather than Japanese origin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/shoplifters-beefy-backpack-rips-open-escalator-sending-dozens-steaks-across-floor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SHOPLIFTER&#8217;S BEEFY BACKPACK RIPS OPEN ON ESCALATOR, SENDING DOZENS OF STEAKS SPRAWLING ACROSS FLOOR<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Evan Carter, the Seattle-based co-founder of The Meat Dudes, a brand focused on Wagyu education and consulting, said the term has become even broader in practice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When consumers see Wagyu today, it usually just means the beef has some level of Wagyu genetics, but beyond that, it can vary a lot,&#8221; Carter said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could be a full blood Wagyu animal with traceable lineage, or it could be a blend with a smaller percentage of Wagyu genetics mixed in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The biggest differences come down to origin and genetics, Hamilton agreed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/popular-steakhouses-dress-code-sparks-backlash-diners-told-ditch-hats-eat-bar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>POPULAR STEAKHOUSE&#8217;S DRESS CODE SPARKS BACKLASH AS DINERS TOLD TO DITCH HATS OR EAT AT THE BAR<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;True Japanese Wagyu is full-blood Wagyu cattle that are born, raised and harvested in Japan, under very strict production standards. It&#8217;s rare outside the country and typically very expensive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>American Wagyu, by contrast, is raised domestically using Japanese genetics, often blended with traditional U.S. beef production methods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That results in exceptional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marbling and flavor<\/a> but with a style that&#8217;s more familiar to U.S. consumers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Because the term isn&#8217;t tightly regulated in the U.S., experts say it can sometimes be used loosely \u2014 especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/restaurants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in restaurants.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/viral-hack-could-save-you-from-spending-insanely-expensive-airport-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>VIRAL HACK COULD SAVE YOU FROM SPENDING ON &#8216;INSANELY EXPENSIVE&#8217; AIRPORT FOOD<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of misunderstanding about Wagyu,&#8221; said chef Jesse Schenker, who serves authentic Japanese A5 Wagyu at his restaurant FOUR in Oyster Bay, New York.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think consumers associate the word &#8216;Wagyu&#8217; with higher price points, but when you see Wagyu on a menu, you have to be careful that it&#8217;s not just being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/food-trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used as a buzzword<\/a> because restaurants can price gouge if they are not using actual Wagyu,&#8221; he told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In America, the words &#8216;Wagyu&#8217; and &#8216;Kobe&#8217; beef on menus get consumers excited and, in turn, operators can charge more for ingredients that may be of lesser quality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital reached out to the American Wagyu Association for comment.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid overpaying for something that may not live up to the label, experts offered a few tips.<\/p>\n<p>Schenker pointed to pricing as a potential red flag.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE FOR MORE LIFESTYLE STORIES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it&#8217;s not expensive enough, be cautious as it might not be real,&#8221; Schenker said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For example, if you see a 16-ounce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/cuisines\/steak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Wagyu steak<\/a> on a menu for $49, you know it&#8217;s not real \u2014 it should be more like $79.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He also advises shoppers to pay attention to details, from marbling when buying beef to how a restaurant presents itself.<\/p>\n<p>Carter said asking a few simple questions can go a long way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The best thing consumers can do is ask a couple simple questions: where is it from and what kind of Wagyu is it?&#8221; he said. &#8220;The more transparency you get, the better chance you have of getting something that actually lives up to the name.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Carter added, &#8220;If a restaurant or butcher can tell you the ranch, you&#8217;re usually on the right track.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Experts agree that, while Wagyu can be worth it, other high-quality but less expensive cuts can be just as indulgent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The simplest tip is to think of Wagyu as an experience,&#8221; Hamilton said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re buying or ordering Wagyu, treat it as a moment to indulge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/experts-reveal-how-spot-fake-wagyu-dont-get-ripped-off-premium-beef\">Source &#8211; https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/experts-reveal-how-spot-fake-wagyu-dont-get-ripped-off-premium-beef <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From grocery store shelves to restaurant menus, premium beef labels are popping up everywhere \u2014 but these labels don&#8217;t always mean what shoppers think.
