As much as Italy would like to be in this year\u2019s World Cup<\/a>, it won\u2019t come at Iran\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n

An envoy for President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/u><\/a> reportedly asked FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in North America this summer. However, Italian sports officials shot down that idea, saying it was “not appropriate.”<\/p>\n

“First of all, it\u2019s not possible. Secondly, it\u2019s not a good idea,” Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said Thursday.<\/p>\n

He added, “Qualification is done on the pitch.”<\/p>\n

Luciano Buonfiglio, the president of the Italian Olympic Committee, which oversees all sports in Italy, also dismissed the idea of taking Iran’s place.<\/p>\n

“I would feel offended,” Buonfiglio said. “You need to deserve to go to the World Cup.”<\/p>\n

Italy\u2019s Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti called the idea “shameful.”<\/p>\n

While Iran was among the first teams to qualify for the World Cup, Italy\u00a0missed out\u00a0for the third consecutive tournament, resulting in the resignations of its\u00a0national team coach\u00a0and\u00a0soccer federation president.<\/p>\n

The Financial Times reported the plan for Trump’s envoy to get Iran replaced is an effort to repair the relationship between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which soured after the former\u2019s comments against\u00a0Pope Leo XIV<\/u><\/a>\u00a0regarding the war with Iran.<\/p>\n

Trump wrote in a Truth Social post last month that Iran would be welcome to compete in the World Cup as scheduled, though it might not be “appropriate” considering the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n

Iran has not withdrawn from the World Cup \u2014 the team is currently\u00a0preparing to play\u00a0in the U.S. despite the war in the Middle East \u2014 and\u00a0FIFA has insisted\u00a0its group-stage games near Los Angeles and in Seattle will go ahead as planned in June.<\/p>\n

FIFA\u00a0has consistently said Iran will stick to the World Cup schedule decided last December, and refused to negotiate any\u00a0suggestion\u00a0of moving the team\u2019s games to co-host Mexico.<\/p>\n
