Georgetown University<\/a>, an institution founded by Bishop John Carroll in 1789, who later became the archbishop of Baltimore, will offer a pornography course to students in the fall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The course, “Understanding the Pornographic,”<\/a> “examines the concept of \u2018the pornographic\u2019 in contemporary media and culture,” according to the course description.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“As students learn about the changing aesthetics, production, and distribution of pornography as a media genre that spans human history, they will also understand \u2018the pornographic\u2019 as a concept that exceeds sexuality and connotes excess and inappropriate affect more generally, as seen in popular designations like \u2018food porn\u2019 and \u2018house porn\u2019 on social media, \u2018warporn\u2019 and \u2018poverty porn\u2019 in discussions of the news media, \u2018inspiration porn\u2019 in disability studies, and more,” the description adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The description also says the course will “pay special attention to the social and political conflicts that attend pornography and the pornographic, particularly as these conflicts have been used to control marginalized populations<\/a> including women, queer and trans folks, and people of color.”<\/p>\n

The syllabus for the class is not posted on the course details page on Georgetown\u2019s website, but instead instructs students to email Amanda Phillips<\/u><\/a>, an associate professor in the Department of English, to obtain the course details.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On her personal website<\/u><\/a>, Phillips says she “writes about sex, death, identity, and politics in video games, with a particular emphasis on centering the insights of queer women of color feminism in the study of technology. Their interests more broadly are in issues of racial and gender justice in and around technoculture, popular media, and the digital humanities.”<\/p>\n

She is the author of “Gamer Trouble: Feminist Confrontations in Digital Culture<\/a>,” as well as the co-editor of the “Queer\/Trans\/Digital<\/a>” book series with NYU Press.\u00a0<\/p>\n
