FIRST ON FOX<\/strong> – The Department of Education (ED) announced on Thursday it will move to a smaller building to reduce the agency’s footprint as part of their broader effort to dismantle itself.<\/a><\/p>\n

Department\u00a0staff will\u00a0move out of the Lyndon B. Johnson headquarters building, so the Department of Energy can eventually move in by August. The move is what the officials call “a\u00a0prudent\u00a0step to\u00a0save hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars and further\u00a0reduce the federal education bureaucracy.”<\/p>\n

The ED said that their relocation will save taxpayers\u00a0approximately $4.8 million annually in\u00a0operating\u00a0costs\u00a0and\u00a0eliminate\u00a0wasted space\u00a0in a building that is\u00a0approximately 70%\u00a0vacant.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“One year ago, President Trump signed\u00a0one of the most consequential executive orders of his presidency\u00a0\u2013\u00a0to\u00a0break up the federal education bureaucracy and return education to the states,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Trump administration<\/a> announced last week an interagency agreement between the ED and the Department of Treasury, with an official calling it the “largest” step to shutting the agency down.<\/p>\n

The official previously told Fox News Digital that staff are\u00a0working to put themselves out of a job<\/u><\/a> under President Donald Trump’s orders because the agency is not needed.<\/p>\n

This agreement follows nine agency\u00a0partnerships<\/u><\/a> over the past year as the Department of Education seeks to minimize itself, shifting power from some of its offices and programs to other federal agencies.<\/p>\n

MCMAHON SAYS GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN PROVED SCHOOLS DON’T NEED FEDERAL OVERSIGHT AT ALL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

While Congress holds the key to shutting the operation down for good, McMahon plans to show legislators that the interagency agreements are “proof of concept” that the ED is not needed for federal grant aid and federal student loans to continue flowing to borrowers.<\/p>\n

Throughout the 2024 campaign, then-candidate Trump promised to eliminate the Department of Education and signed an executive order directing his administration to\u00a0start disbanding it<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
