My Democratic colleagues<\/a> have opposed President Donald Trump\u2019s agenda at every turn, and that\u2019s their right. But their decision to shut down the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)<\/a> isn\u2019t some harmless act of political gamesmanship; it\u2019s incredibly dangerous.<\/p>\n

In the one month since Democrats voted to deny funding to DHS, the United States has faced at least four apparent terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n

On March 1, a gunman wearing a “Property of Allah” shirt\u00a0killed three Americans\u00a0and wounded 13 others outside Buford\u2019s Backyard Beer Garden in Austin, Texas. On March 7, two men\u00a0tossed explosives\u00a0into a crowd of protesters near Gracie Mansion in New York City. The men told the New York Police Department that they had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. They had hoped to kill more people than the Boston bombers, but the courageous acts of NYPD officers on the scene foiled their attack.<\/p>\n

DHS HAMMERS DEMS OVER AIRPORT SECURITY LINES AMID FUNDING LAPSE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

On March 12, a gunman \u2014 who had been\u00a0released from prison\u00a0after providing material support to ISIS \u2014 entered a classroom on the campus of Old Dominion University, shouted “Allahu Akbar,” and opened fire. He killed an ROTC instructor before brave students stopped him. That same day, a man in West Bloomfield, Michigan, injured one security guard when he rammed his vehicle into the Temple Israel synagogue while preschool was in session. According to the\u00a0Israeli government, the suspect \u2014 who apparently shot himself amid a shootout with the Temple\u2019s security \u2014 had a brother who was a member of the terrorist group Hezbollah<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These terrorists killed four Americans and injured dozens more. It makes me nauseous to imagine how many more could have died if not for the bravery of local law enforcement officers, the Temple\u2019s armed security and Old Dominion\u2019s ROTC students.<\/p>\n

These attacks on American soil all occurred against the backdrop of President Trump\u2019s decisive action in Iran<\/a>. To be clear: President Trump had no choice but to strike Iran. He wasn\u2019t trying to start a war; he is trying to end one. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei \u2014 who shared the same affinity for killing Americans as the terrorists who just struck within the United States \u2014 wanted to resume building nuclear weapons, and he would have been able to do that if we didn\u2019t stop Iran\u2019s\u00a0missile and drone production\u00a0soon.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m confident our airmen will annihilate Iran\u2019s missile supply, but that won\u2019t eliminate the threat to the American people. The Ayatollah\u00a0may have used his last rotten breath\u00a0to trigger sleeper cells within the United States. These lone-wolf terrorists may be plotting additional attacks here at home, and we have no clue how many terrorists may be living among us because President Biden left our border wide open for four years.<\/p>\n

During that time, the Biden administration released at least\u00a099 known individuals\u00a0from the terrorist watchlist into the country \u2014 and those are just the suspects we know about. It will take an all-hands-on-deck effort to find and deport every terrorist lurking among the estimated\u00a0millions of unvetted people\u00a0that the Biden administration released into our country.<\/p>\n

Yet DHS, which employs the very people who should be hunting these lone wolves, is shut down because my Democratic colleagues have been throwing a month-long temper tantrum.<\/p>\n

At the heart of this meltdown is the fact that many of my Democratic colleagues want open borders. They don\u2019t think we should deport anybody, and they\u2019re holding funding for DHS hostage because they hate the idea that officers at Customs and Border Protection or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) might actually enforce our immigration laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In turn, they\u2019ve made a\u00a0series of demands\u00a0to resume funding. Some of the requests were reasonable, and the Trump administration\u00a0agreed\u00a0to implement them as soon as possible. For example, all ICE officers<\/a> will\u00a0wear body cameras\u00a0during future operations. They\u2019d do it right now, but it\u2019s hard to buy cameras when Democrats won\u2019t approve their funding.<\/p>\n

The remaining Democratic demands are weapons-grade stupid. For example, they want to forbid ICE officers from\u00a0wearing masks\u00a0and force them to display their names on their uniforms. These policies would endanger the lives of ICE agents and their families. We can\u2019t expect these law enforcement officers to focus on hunting terrorists when anti-ICE lunatics are\u00a0following their vehicles\u00a0or\u00a0showing up at their churches.<\/p>\n

We all know some Democrats hate President Trump more than the Devil hates holy water, but we\u2019ve seen four apparent terrorist attacks in two weeks. The Department of Homeland Security isn\u2019t a pawn in a political game. We need these officers focused on spotting sleeper cells, not their missing paychecks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To my Democratic colleagues: Don\u2019t wait for another attack to get serious about protecting America\u2019s security. Reopen DHS today.<\/p>\n
