Walk through any grocery store in America right now and you\u2019ll see the same thing in every aisle. People staring at prices like they\u2019re reading a foreign language.<\/p>\n

A box of cereal at $8.\u00a0A bag of chips for $6. Eggs and ground beef feel like luxuries. A simple couple of bags of groceries easily top $150. Washington politicians argue about inflation, supply chains and corporate profits. But there\u2019s one obvious solution nobody seems to talk about anymore.<\/p>\n

What if Americans had a mandate to grow their own food again?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not a radical idea. It\u2019s actually how this country operated for most of its history.<\/p>\n

Today, many middle and high school students<\/a> graduate without knowing the most basic food skills, including how to plant a tomato, grow lettuce, compost soil or understand how long it actually takes food to grow.<\/p>\n

We teach calculus, Shakespeare and trigonometry. All valuable subjects, but they won\u2019t lower grocery prices. But somehow we\u2019ve decided that\u00a0food literacy<\/a> and survival \u2014 meaning\u00a0the ability to grow and understand food is simply neglected.<\/p>\n

In an era of rising grocery prices that won\u2019t go backwards no matter who is in the White House, that\u2019s a huge mistake for America.<\/p>\n

A single tomato plant can produce\u00a020 to 30 pounds of tomatoes in one season.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t like tomatoes?\u00a0Too bad.\u00a0A modest backyard garden can generate\u00a0hundreds of dollars of vegetables each year,\u00a0including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, herbs and squash.\u00a0There are systems today that can be used in apartments and townhomes that don\u2019t have land to grow lettuce, herbs, and more.<\/p>\n

Multiply that across millions of American households, and you suddenly start reducing pressure on the grocery system itself. But the real benefit goes far beyond cheaper tomatoes.<\/p>\n

Teaching kids how to grow food teaches them something our current education system struggles to deliver by explaining\u00a0real-world economics. When a student plants seeds, tends soil, waters plants and waits weeks for the harvest, they learn lessons that no textbook can replicate.<\/p>\n

They learn to live off the land.<\/p>\n

They also learn something else that\u2019s increasingly rare in modern America.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0where food actually comes from.<\/p>\n

Ask a group of kids where carrots come from, and you\u2019ll hear answers like “Publix” or “the grocery store.”<\/p>\n

That disconnect from agriculture would have baffled earlier generations of Americans.<\/p>\n

RICK PERRY: WHERE’S THE BEEF? TRUMP KNOWS AND HE’S TRYING TO MAKE IT AFFORDABLE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

During World War II, Americans created what were known as\u00a0Victory Gardens<\/a>. More than\u00a020 million households planted gardens in backyards, empty lots and community spaces. At one point, those gardens produced\u00a0roughly 40 percent of the vegetables consumed in the United States. Let that sink in for a moment.<\/p>\n

Nearly half of the country\u2019s vegetables came from everyday citizens growing food themselves.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t just patriotic. It was practical.<\/p>\n

Today we\u2019re far more dependent on complex supply chains that stretch across continents. Fertilizer prices, transportation costs, labor shortages and global conflicts all ripple through the grocery store.<\/p>\n

But a tomato plant in your backyard doesn\u2019t care about global shipping routes.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why every middle and high school in America should include a simple but powerful program:\u00a0food literacy and school gardens.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t require acres of farmland. Many schools already have unused green space. Raised beds, small gardens and seasonal planting programs could teach students:<\/p>\n

\u2022 How soil works \u2022 How seeds grow \u2022 Seasonal food cycles \u2022 Composting and sustainability \u2022 Water conservation \u2022 Basic food preservation<\/p>\n

The harvest could even go back into school cafeterias or local food banks.<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s where the idea becomes even more powerful.<\/p>\n

Americans wouldn\u2019t just save money.\u00a0\u00a0They would become healthier instead of getting addicted to processed foods.<\/p>\n

Fresh vegetables grown in gardens are often more nutrient-rich than produce that travels thousands of miles through a national distribution chain. When families have easy access to fresh tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and herbs, they naturally eat more whole foods and fewer ultra-processed ones.<\/p>\n

And that matters because America\u2019s healthcare crisis<\/a> is increasingly tied to diet.<\/p>\n

According to the CDC, roughly\u00a06 in 10 Americans live with at least one chronic disease\u00a0such as heart disease, diabetes or obesity<\/a>. Many of these conditions are heavily influenced by diet and lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Healthcare costs tied to chronic disease now run into\u00a0trillions of dollars annually.<\/p>\n

Think about this connective tissue. If more Americans eat fresh food and fewer processed foods, long-term medical costs fall.<\/p>\n

Gardening also encourages something else the country desperately needs which is\u00a0physical activity. Digging soil, planting beds, watering plants and maintaining a garden gets people outside and moving instead of sitting indoors.\u00a0Heck, I made a ton as a kid raking leaves and now all people want to do is blow them.<\/p>\n

In other words, growing food improves\u00a0both sides of the family budget:<\/p>\n

PRESIDENT TRUMP IS TAKING IMPORTANT, STRATEGIC STEPS TO PROTECT AMERICAN CONSUMERS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Lower grocery bills. Lower medical bills. That\u2019s a powerful one-two punch solution for American households. The biggest benefit might be something less measurable.<\/p>\n

It restores a sense of independence.<\/p>\n

Americans are used to solving problems with bigger government programs, more subsidies or more regulations. Sometimes the solution is simpler.<\/p>\n

Give people knowledge and tools.<\/p>\n

A generation that knows how to grow food is a generation that is less vulnerable to price shocks, supply disruptions and inflation<\/a>. You may not be able to grow everything you eat. But even producing a portion of your food creates resilience.<\/p>\n

And maybe, just maybe it teaches the next generation something deeper about self-reliance, responsibility and the value of hard work.<\/p>\n

Because the cheapest vegetables you\u2019ll ever buy\u2026are the ones you grow yourself.<\/p>\n
