In others \u2014 it&#8217;s a nonstarter.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/cuisines\/southern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern staple<\/a>, grits are rarely found on breakfast menus in much of the U.S., particularly in New England.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, New England&#8217;s fare of baked beans, fish cakes and corned beef hash could be unappealing to most Southerners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/breakfast-timing-may-hold-key-living-longer-new-research-reveals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>BREAKFAST TIMING MAY HOLD THE KEY TO LIVING LONGER, NEW RESEARCH REVEALS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For chefs who&#8217;ve crossed the Mason-Dixon line, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/meals\/breakfast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the breakfast divide<\/a> is unmistakable, said Suzanne Vizethann, a Southern chef who relocated to Maine.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, she won an episode of the Food Network&#8217;s &#8220;Chopped,&#8221; beating out chefs from New York and Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Vizethann runs Buttermilk Kitchen, a Southern restaurant brand serving two very different locales: Atlanta, Georgia, and Camden, Maine.<\/p>\n<p>Vizethann told Fox News Digital she moved to the Pine Tree State after deciding to take over an 81-year-old diner, abandoning her original plans to start a bed and breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They were going out of business. \u2026 All I can say is, it was like fate,&#8221; Vizethann said. &#8220;It just really felt right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/olympians-cant-stop-eating-viral-chocolate-lava-cake-even-breakfast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>OLYMPIANS CAN&#8217;T STOP EATING VIRAL CHOCOLATE LAVA CAKE, EVEN FOR BREAKFAST<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the success of her Southern-inspired restaurant in coastal Maine, Vizethann noted that palates &#8220;are a little bit different.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the main things I&#8217;ve noticed with true Mainers [is] \u2026 they don&#8217;t like things as sweet as in the South,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve noticed they use less syrup and less jam. \u2026 But to my surprise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/meals\/breakfast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the grits<\/a> have been really well received.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/drinks\/coffee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dark coffee<\/a> is another point of contrast, along with how heavily dishes are seasoned.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I like spicy food a lot. I like heavily seasoned food,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s something that you don&#8217;t find as much up here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That said, there&#8217;s still overlap between the two regional cuisines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maine is huge with blueberries and syrup and potatoes,&#8221; Vizethann said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I think that&#8217;s something everybody loves, especially in the South. We do a lot of stuff with blueberries as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/cuisines\/seafood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more seafood-focused<\/a> since we&#8217;re on the coast \u2026 but there&#8217;s a lot of seafood in the South as well,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, we&#8217;re doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food that&#8217;s relatable<\/a> \u2014 more country comfort-style dishes that translate well no matter where you are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, there are some New England staples Vizethann can&#8217;t get behind. She does, however, have a fondness for Moxie, Maine&#8217;s famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/drinks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polarizing drink<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not a big corned beef hash person,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve just never liked it. We do have it on our menu, and I think it&#8217;s very good. It&#8217;s just not my thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rye bread is another popular New England food, although she prefers &#8220;something like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/dr-oz-blasts-white-foods-obesity-drivers-federal-dietary-guidelines-continue-make-waves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">white bread<\/a> or sourdough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>CLICK HERE FOR MORE LIFESTYLE STORIES<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Atlanta is totally different from Camden, Maine, but everyone shares a love for a great quality breakfast,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what I love about food \u2014 the connection it brings, no matter where you&#8217;re from or who you are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The blueprint for a perfect Southern breakfast looks very different from its New England counterpart, Vizethann said.<\/p>\n<p>For a Southern breakfast, Vizethann said, &#8220;you&#8217;ve got to have grits, bacon, some sort of eggs, a biscuit for sure, either biscuit or cornbread [and] gravy, typically.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In New England, however, she&#8217;ll prepare &#8220;haddock fish cakes that we deep-fry and serve those with some marinated tomatoes, eggs and toasted English muffins,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re very big on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/american-diner-lingo-burn-the-british-meant-toasted-english-muffin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English muffins<\/a> up here, which I personally love as well. So I think that would be the perfect New England breakfast.
