German soccer team Werder Bremen canceled its planned trip to Minnesota, citing unrest caused by recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)<\/a> actions there, reports said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Bundesliga club was expected to visit Minnesota and Michigan<\/a> in May to play exhibition matches, according to the BBC.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Playing in a city where there\u2019s unrest and people have been shot, that does not fit with our values here at Werder Bremen,” Christoph Pieper, the club\u2019s head of communications, told Politico.<\/u><\/a> “Furthermore, it was unclear for us which players could be able to enter the United States due to the stricter entry requirements.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We as a club, we have clear\u00a0values,”\u00a0Pieper reportedly added Friday. “Our club stands for an open,\u00a0pluralistic\u00a0and united society. We are committed to ensuring that all people \u2014 regardless of their origin, skin\u00a0color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity,\u00a0age\u00a0or disability \u2014 are naturally included and have a firm place in our community.”<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the club also told Reuters,<\/u><\/a> “It is correct that we cancelled a planned trip to Minnesota in the United States,” and, “There were sporting,\u00a0economic\u00a0and political reasons for this.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s border czar Tom Homan announced last week that the administration is winding down Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis.\u00a0<\/p>\n
