FIRST ON FOX:<\/strong> A man accused of shooting a South Carolina<\/a> deputy in the chest during an early-morning traffic stop has been identified as a criminal illegal immigrant with a prior deportation and felony illegal re-entry conviction, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).\u00a0<\/p>\n

DHS officials told Fox News Digital that Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies responded to a call for shots fired shortly after 9 p.m.\u00a0on Feb. 10\u00a0on\u00a0Johns Island.<\/p>\n

They were unable to\u00a0find\u00a0the suspect, later\u00a0identified\u00a0as\u00a0Floriberto Perez-Nieto, a criminal illegal immigrant<\/a> from Mexico.<\/p>\n

At about 3 a.m. the next day, deputies received another call from the same person, who reported Perez-Nieto had returned to the area.<\/p>\n

Deputies\u00a0spotted Perez-Nieto’s\u00a0car and\u00a0attempted\u00a0to pull\u00a0him over, but he tried to evade arrest and shot one of the deputies<\/a> in the chest,\u00a0according to authorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other deputies returned fire and\u00a0Perez-Nieto\u00a0was later pronounced dead at the hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n

DHS officials said the deputy who was shot in the chest was wearing body armor.<\/p>\n

“This criminal illegal alien illegally\u00a0obtained a firearm and\u00a0nearly killed a law enforcement officer,” DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital.\u00a0“Thankfully, the officer\u2019s body armor saved his life.\u00a0There could have been quite a different tragic outcome for this officer and his family.”<\/p>\n

The deputy who was shot has not yet been publicly identified by authorities.<\/p>\n

Perez-Nieto was previously arrested after he\u00a0illegally\u00a0entered the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0from Mexico,\u00a0at an unknown\u00a0date and\u00a0location,\u00a0and without inspection by an immigration official, according to DHS.<\/p>\n

Officials said he committed a felony by illegally re-entering the country at an unknown date and time.<\/p>\n

It is unclear where Perez-Nieto allegedly obtained the firearm<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The CCSO professional standards division will conduct an internal investigation<\/a> related to the shooting.<\/p>\n

Deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending further review, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.<\/p>\n

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was immediately notified, responded to the scene and will lead the investigation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
