{"id":118845,"date":"2026-01-28T14:04:25","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T19:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/sleep-timing-could-directly-impact-chances-of-heart-attack-or-stroke-study-suggests-118845"},"modified":"2026-01-28T14:04:25","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T19:04:25","slug":"sleep-timing-could-directly-impact-chances-of-heart-attack-or-stroke-study-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/sleep-timing-could-directly-impact-chances-of-heart-attack-or-stroke-study-suggests-118845","title":{"rendered":"Sleep timing could directly impact chances of heart attack or stroke, study suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Adults who consider themselves &#8220;night owls&#8221; tend to score lower in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/heart-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cardiovascular health<\/a> assessments and face a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to a new study published today in the\u00a0 Journal of the American Heart Association, which examined how a person\u2019s chronotype \u2014 their natural tendency to be active in the morning or evening \u2014 is linked to overall heart health.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers looked at 14 years of UK Biobank data for around 300,000 adults averaging 57 years old, according to a press release for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/medical-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/easy-nutrition-tweak-could-transform-sleep-starting-this-evening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>EASY NUTRITION TWEAK COULD TRANSFORM YOUR SLEEP \u2014 STARTING THIS EVENING<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around 8% of the participants described themselves as &#8220;definitely evening people,&#8221; which means they stayed up very late. Another 24% said they were &#8220;definitely morning people,&#8221; as they tended to wake up earlier and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/sleep-disorders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">go to bed earlier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The largest &#8220;intermediate&#8221; group, which included 67% of participants, said they were unsure or in neither group.<\/p>\n<p>Each person\u2019s heart health was determined using the American Heart Association\u2019s Life\u2019s Essential 8 score.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Life\u2019s Essential 8 is a comprehensive assessment that includes activity levels, diet, blood pressure, cholesterol, use of nicotine, sleep patterns, weight management and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blood sugar<\/a>,&#8221; shared Dr. Bradley Serwer, an interventional cardiologist and chief medical officer at VitalSolution, an Ingenovis Health company.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/men-beer-bellies-may-face-serious-heart-damage-even-normal-weight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MEN WITH &#8216;BEER BELLIES&#8217; MAY FACE SERIOUS HEART DAMAGE REGARDLESS OF WEIGHT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers also looked at incidence of heart attack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nervous-system-health\/stroke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">or stroke<\/a> over the follow-up period.<\/p>\n<p>They determined that people who were more active in the evening (&#8220;night owls&#8221;) had a 79% higher risk of poor cardiovascular health compared to the intermediate group, and a 16% higher risk of heart attack or stroke, the release stated.<\/p>\n<p>People who identified as being more active in the morning had slightly better heart health scores. The link was more pronounced in women than men.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;Evening people&#8217; often experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/sleep-disorders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circadian misalignment<\/a>, meaning their internal body clock may not match the natural day-to-night light cycle or their typical daily schedules,&#8221; said lead study author Sina Kianersi, Ph.D., a research fellow in the division of sleep and circadian disorders at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, both in Boston, in the release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE FOR MORE HEALTH STORIES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Evening people may be more likely to have behaviors that can affect cardiovascular health, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/diet-trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poorer diet quality<\/a>, smoking, and inadequate or irregular sleep.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Serwer, who was not involved in the study, noted that lifestyle habits played a significant role in these findings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cardiovascular disease has multiple contributing causes,&#8221; the Maryland-based cardiologist told Fox News Digital. &#8220;Sleep is just one variable \u2014 and the importance of high-quality, restorative sleep should not be undervalued.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The findings could help doctors tailor lifestyle and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/health-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical interventions<\/a> to help prevent cardiovascular events, the researchers noted.<\/p>\n<p>The study did have some limitations, chiefly that it does not prove that staying up late causes heart problems, but only establishes an association.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the study relied on people reporting their own schedules, habits and health, which could be skewed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the people included in the UK Biobank are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/immigration\/demographics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">primarily white<\/a> and tend to have better health than the general population, the researchers noted, which means the results may not be widely generalized.<\/p>\n<p>Serwer added, &#8220;While quality sleep is important, further studies are required to show exactly what sort of impact sleep alone has on cardiovascular health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/sleep-timing-could-directly-impact-chances-heart-attack-stroke-study-suggests\">Source &#8211; https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/sleep-timing-could-directly-impact-chances-heart-attack-stroke-study-suggests <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adults who consider themselves &#8220;night owls&#8221; tend to score lower in cardiovascular health assessments and face a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
