It&#8217;s been used for centuries in traditional foods and remedies, but modern research has mostly focused on its role as a natural, non-glycemic sweetener.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/scientists-discover-superfood-potential-overlooked-vegetable-most-americans-cant-prepare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SCIENTISTS DISCOVER &#8216;SUPERFOOD&#8217; POTENTIAL IN OVERLOOKED VEGETABLE MOST AMERICANS CAN&#8217;T PREPARE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From a dietitian&#8217;s perspective, monk fruit is best known for its naturally sweet compounds, which allow it to be used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">foods and drinks<\/a> without adding sugar,&#8221; Kelly Springer, a registered dietitian in Skaneateles, New York, and founder of Kelly&#8217;s Choice, told Fox News Digital. Springer was not affiliated with the study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fruit has a spongy texture. It&#8217;s typically dried rather than eaten raw, with a brittle shell and stringy pulp that&#8217;s traditionally cracked open and steeped to make a mildly sweet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/drinks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">herbal tea.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The study<\/a> aimed to take a closer look at the fruit&#8217;s peel and pulp rather than just the sweetening compounds typically extracted for commercial use.<\/p>\n<p>The team identified several major groups of compounds, including antioxidants, flavonoids, terpenoids and amino acids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Flavonoids and terpenoids are known for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/nutrition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties,<\/a> while amino acids are essential for protein production, tissue repair and immune function.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It also contains plant compounds that may contribute to the body&#8217;s antioxidant defenses,&#8221; Springer said.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond identifying the compounds, scientists also studied how they interact with receptors in the body.
