What could two men from entirely different generations, politics, and backgrounds possibly share in common? A mutual concern for America\u2019s future and the young men growing up in it.<\/p>\n

Our shared\u00a0lived\u00a0experience\u2014an experience that we\u2019re seeing become less frequent\u2014is driving our concern as we see it move from the norm to the exception. As young men, both of us volunteered<\/a>. It instilled\u00a0in us a sense of pride, duty, identity and connection. For Neil, it was a summer with a nonprofit to engage with kids in a small low-income fishing village in Labrador, Canada. For Alex, it was time spent as a Boy Scout learning the power of collective action and shared\u00a0responsibility to community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These service experiences were formative in shaping who we are. However, as volunteering declines and isolation increases,\u00a0opportunities for connection through service are not top\u00a0of mind for most young American men.\u00a0<\/p>\n

DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY MAY IMPACT YOUNG ADULTS TWICE AS MUCH AS TEENS, HARVARD SURVEY FINDS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Across classrooms, workplaces and online, we\u2019re seeing what happens when young men become untethered\u00a0from their communities. The data alone tells a powerful story. Among 18-35 year-olds, men are\u00a0significantly more likely<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to feel lonely compared\u00a0to their female counterparts. Fifteen percent of young men today\u00a0report<\/u><\/a>\u00a0having no close friends, compared to 3 percent in the 1990s. Perhaps most alarmingly,\u00a0suicide rates among men in 2021 were\u00a0four times<\/u><\/a>\u00a0higher than those of women. And the\u00a0most common last words<\/u><\/a>\u00a0men use to describe themselves before they take their own lives are “worthless” and “useless.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

People are taking note, but we need\u00a0to take action. This year, California launched\u00a0a statewide initiative to shine a spotlight on this growing emergency and, more importantly, an unexpected\u00a0solution:\u00a0volunteering<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Volunteering gives men a structured\u00a0way to build relationships and feel part of something larger than themselves.\u00a0Research shows<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that young people who volunteer show significantly better well-being. Youth who volunteer have 25% lower anxiety, are 35% less likely to have behavioral problems, and are 66% more likely to be “flourishing” compared\u00a0to non-volunteers.<\/p>\n

IF YOU WANT TO HELP AMERICA, START SERVING<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Yet in 2023,\u00a0only 34.1%\u00a0<\/u><\/a> of young people ages 16 to 17 volunteered\u00a0in the past year. Consider a\u00a0recent\u00a0NBC poll<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in which Gen Z men ranked\u00a0making their family or community proud and using their talents to help others among the top five markers of success. Volunteering is one of the few cost-free ways to live out these values and create purpose and connection as a result.<\/p>\n

So, what must we do to reconnect young men to community through service? We need\u00a0to rebuild the civic infrastructure around volunteering so that people understand\u00a0where<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0how<\/i>\u00a0to get involved. We also need\u00a0to show young people that volunteering isn\u2019t just good for their communities \u2013 it\u2019s profoundly good for them too.<\/p>\n

Points of Light found that 44% of people who want to volunteer are unsure how to get involved\u00a0and where to find\u00a0opportunities, or say they cannot find\u00a0opportunities near where they live or work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Points of Light is calling for a collective national response\u2014to elevate the value of volunteering, reduce these barriers by meeting young people where they are, and ultimately double the number of volunteers by 2035.<\/p>\n

Already, the organization\u2014whose mission is to increase volunteerism around the world\u2014engages 4 million volunteers annually. But expanding our volunteer infrastructure through public and private investment is critical to achieving this goal.<\/p>\n

Every young man should have access to\u00a0opportunities that foster purpose, pride and belonging. That could mean corporations putting real dollars and time where it matters, offering paid volunteer hours for workers to mentor and serve alongside young men. It could mean schools\u2013from primary to post-secondary\u2013community centers and youth organizations strengthening the programs that make volunteering accessible: from service-learning in classrooms to after-school and weekend\u00a0opportunities.<\/p>\n

As America approaches its 250th birthday<\/a>, it raises the question: what kind of nation do we want the next generation to inherit? How can we ensure it\u2019s one that doesn\u2019t leave\u00a0anyone<\/i>\u00a0behind?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Governments, institutions and leaders must come together to make service central to American life. In turn, this will build a culture where a generation of young men feels connected\u00a0to one another, proud of their roles and rooted\u00a0in the communities they serve.<\/p>\n

No crisis can be solved\u00a0overnight, but the choices we make right now will determine the future we hand off to\u00a0all\u00a0<\/i>young people. We can either continue to watch our young men drift further into isolation<\/a>, or we can offer them a life raft\u2014an\u00a0opportunity that we know will work.<\/p>\n

Together, we can help the next generation of young men find purpose and belonging\u2014one act of service at a time.<\/p>\n
