Nigeria\u2019s military<\/a> announced Wednesday that 62 hostages were rescued and two militants were killed in a pair of operations against armed groups, a report said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The development comes after more than 160 worshippers were kidnapped from two churches in Nigeria on Sunday by gangs. It’s unclear if any of the worshippers are among the hostages rescued.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba told Reuters<\/u><\/a> that Nigerian forces raided a location in the northwestern Zamfara state after receiving tips that captives were being held there. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The 62 rescued hostages are now in safe custody and are in the process of being reunited with their families, Reuters reported, citing the army.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s church kidnapping incident<\/a>, which the BBC said targeted both Christians and Muslims, marks the latest mass kidnapping in Nigeria\u2019s long-running streak of religiously fueled attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nigeria has experienced a dramatic surge in mass attacks<\/a> by armed gangs, particularly Islamist militants, who often\u00a0operate\u00a0from forest enclaves and target villages,\u00a0schools\u00a0and places of worship.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Kaduna state police on Monday\u00a0reportedly cited\u00a0conservative figures, saying dozens were being held captive as the investigation\u00a0remains\u00a0in its\u00a0early stages, a senior church leader noted that more than 160 worshippers were abducted by\u00a0gunmen\u00a0over the weekend.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
