{"id":117953,"date":"2026-01-21T13:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T18:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/washington-post-urges-government-return-materials-seized-from-reporter-during-fbi-search-117953"},"modified":"2026-01-21T13:47:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T18:47:11","slug":"washington-post-urges-government-return-materials-seized-from-reporter-during-fbi-search","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cablemanpro.com\/wallstreetpr\/washington-post-urges-government-return-materials-seized-from-reporter-during-fbi-search-117953","title":{"rendered":"Washington Post urges government return materials seized from reporter during FBI search"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Washington Post demanded on Wednesday that federal law enforcement officials return electronic devices that were seized last week when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/tech\/topics\/fbi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI<\/a>\u00a0executed a search warrant on reporter Hannah Natanson&#8217;s home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Natanson was at her Virginia home on Jan. 14 when it was searched as part of a probe into &#8220;a government contractor accused of illegally retaining classified government materials.&#8221; Federal agents seized two phones, two laptops, a recorder, a portable hard drive and a Garmin watch, according to the Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post\u00a0filed two motions\u00a0with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia on Wednesday, writing that the search &#8220;flouts the First Amendment and ignores federal statutory safeguards for journalists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/washington-post-reporters-home-searched-by-fbi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WASHINGTON POST REPORTER\u2019S HOME SEARCHED BY FBI<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Post, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/01\/21\/washington-post-hannah-natanson-search-court-filing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">covered the story itself<\/a>, reported that government officials said the seized data was still being processed and hasn\u2019t been reviewed yet. The first public filing related to the search said that &#8220;almost none&#8221; of the seized items were relevant to the warrant, according to the Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The outrageous seizure of our reporter\u2019s confidential newsgathering materials chills speech, cripples reporting, and inflicts irreparable harm every day the government keeps its hands on these materials. We have asked the court to order the immediate return of all seized materials and prevent their use. Anything less would license future newsroom raids and normalize censorship by search warrant,&#8221; a Washington Post spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News Digital<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The warrant used to search the reporter\u2019s home stated law enforcement was investigating Aurelio Perez-Lugones, a system administrator in Maryland who has a top-secret security clearance and has been accused of accessing and taking home classified intelligence reports that were found in his lunchbox and his basement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/washington-post-takes-heat-putting-spotlight-erika-kirks-wardrobe-wake-husbands-assassination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WASHINGTON POST TAKES HEAT FOR PUTTING SPOTLIGHT ON ERIKA KIRK\u2019S WARDROBE IN WAKE OF HUSBAND\u2019S ASSASSINATION<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perez-Lugones is an American citizen who was born in Miami and now resides in Laurel, Maryland, according to a criminal complaint. He has been a government contractor since 2002 and possesses top secret security clearance.<\/p>\n<p>Perez-Lugones\u2019 current role is &#8220;administrative,&#8221; according to the complaint. He works as a systems engineer and information technology specialist for a government contracting company whose primary customer is a government agency. His workplace is in Annapolis Junction, Maryland, according to the complaint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perez-Lugones is accused of using databases and repositories to search for, access and view a classified intelligence report related to a foreign country.
